Marvel, Sweeney capture league weekly awards

Marvel ripped 10 hits in 19 at-bats for a .526 batting average as she earned her first Player of the Week honor of the season. Among the Manasquan, N.J. native’s ten hits were two doubles and two triples. Marvel’s eight triples are one shy of the Lehigh single season record and she currently leads the nation with 0.19 triples per game. Last week Marvel also scored seven runs and drove in six runs, including a three RBI effort in game one of Sunday’s doubleheader sweep of Holy Cross.
For the season, Marvel leads the Patriot League with a .398 average and is hitting a robust .532 in league games. Marvel currently leads the Patriot League in batting average, runs scored, triples and stolen bases.
After earning Pitcher of the Week honors six times last year, Sweeney earned her second award of the season, going 4-0 with a 0.76 earned run average in four appearances last week. The
On the year, Sweeney improved her record to 17-4 with a league-best 1.52 ERA. With 43 career wins, Sweeney moved into the top ten in Patriot League history. She also ranks seventh in league annals with 356 strikeouts.
Also on Tuesday senior Heather Hamasaki, junior Megan Conrad, sophomore Whitney Lowe and freshman Tiffany Curtis earned honorable mentions from the Patriot League.
Hamasaki batted .400 (8-for-20) with a team leading seven runs batted in last week as Lehigh earned two wins over Monmouth and four over Holy Cross.
Conrad and Lowe both had strong weeks as the Mountain Hawks’ second base platoon. The duo combined to go 11-for-17 at the plate with seven RBI. Conrad delivered five hits in seven at-bats and also drove in five runs, while Lowe batted .600 including a game winning walk-off single in game two of Saturday’s doubleheader sweep over the Crusaders.
Curtis earned yet another honorable mention, winning both of her starts to improve to 10-7 on the season. The freshman right-hander allowed just two earned runs in 12.2 innings and added 12 strikeouts.
