Mountain Hawks sweep pair from arch-rival Lafayette

Game one featured plenty of offense as the teams exchanged runs in the first inning, but then Lehigh exploded with five runs in the second, keyed by a two-RBI double from senior third baseman Kelly Kliewer. After the Leopards put three on the board in the top of the third to close within two, Lehigh put together another five run frame in the bottom of the third. The Mountain Hawks loaded the bases with three singles and a fielder’s choice before freshman Taryn Hanley crushed a Therese Taraschi offering over the centerfield fence for a grand slam. Senior Jess Young followed Hanley’s blast with a solo shot of her own and the back-to-back homers put Lehigh up 11-4.
The Brown and White scored another run in the fourth and the game was called after the top of the fifth. Stefanie Forlenza pitched two and two thirds innings of scoreless relief to get the win. Young and freshman Kate Marvel had three hits apiece; Young also drove in three, while Marvel scored three.
The nightcap featured far fewer offensive fireworks. Lehigh got a run in the second inning as catcher Mary Wieder drove in Kelly Kliewer with an RBI single, and then in the third Marvel came around to score from second on an infield single by Young. The two runs were plenty for senior Emily Ling, who tossed a two-hit shutout striking out 12 Leopards to notch her tenth win of the season.
“The first game was like one of those old school league games, the teams were hitting the ball all over the place,” said head coach Fran Troyan. “The second game was a lot more typical for us; strong pitching, good defense and timely hitting.”
Lehigh and Lafayette will wrap-up their four game series with a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. Game one is slated to get underway at 3:00 from Kaufman field.
