Lehigh completes four game sweep of Lafayette

4/5/2005 12:00:00 AM | Softball

Bethlehem, PA – Like the day before, Lehigh and Lafayette played one close game and one blowout and for the second day in a row the Mountain Hawks swept a doubleheader from their arch-rivals from Easton, winning 6-4 and 11-0 at Kaufman Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks complete the four game sweep of the Leopards and improve to a perfect 8-0 in league play, 22-4 overall; and sweep the season series from the Leopards for the sixth straight season. Lafayette is now 5-20 overall, 2-6 in the Patriot League.

The Leopards got off to the fast start in game one, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth and then, after Lehigh scored two in the bottom of the first to tie, scored a run in third and one in the fourth to lead 4-2 heading into the bottom of the fourth. Lehigh pulled even in that frame as a Mendy Martin single plated Julie Sterrett and then freshman Kate Marvel singled to drive in pinch runner Ali Linsk.

The game would stay scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when Taryn Hanley singled on a perfectly placed squeeze bunt, scoring Whitney Schenbeck with the go ahead run. The Mountain Hawks would add an insurance run and then Emily Ling shut the door in the seventh. Ling pitched two innings of scoreless relief to notch her 11th win of the season. Marvel was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and one driven in. Six different players drove in one run apiece for the Brown and White.

“In the first game Lafayette played their hearts out,” head coach Fran Troyan said. “We didn’t play our best, but we got the hits when we needed them and played with a lot of heart.”

In game two Lehigh scored early and often against Lafayette pitching. The Mountain Hawks plated three runs in the first, third and fourth innings and put two on the board in the second without the aid of a base hit. Head coach Fran Troyan rested most of his regulars as 11 different Mountain Hawks had a base hit; senior Britt Swanson the only player to pick up multiple hits. Whitney Schenbeck drove in a pair with a hit in her only at bat and Megan Conrad picked up her first two career RBI with a fourth inning triple.

Ling started in the circle and pitched two innings before giving way to Stefanie Forlenza, who pitched the final three innings to improve to 4-0 on the season. Game two was called after four and a half innings due to the eight run rule.

The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Thursday when they will step out of conference to play a doubleheader with Princeton. Game one gets underway at 3:00 from Princeton, N.J.
