“It was a total team effort,” said head coach Julie Mazer. “We possessed the ball really well and made good decisions with the ball. We kept getting the second and third shots that were on goal.”
At 10:10 into the game, Katie Lachman put the Hoyas on the board first when she notched her first goal of the season off of an assist from Kristen Volpe. However, Lehigh came back to tie the game 1-1 when sophomore Kara Zweizig found the back of the cage at 19:15. Two-and-a-half minutes later, the Mountain Hawks were awarded a penalty stroke after Georgetown goalie Abby Winer took out freshman Morgan Christopher, who was on a fast-break towards the goal. Senior Moira Garrity scored off the penalty stroke, giving Lehigh a 2-1 lead.
Lehigh dominated the scoreboard in the second half. Junior Christy Smith, who recorded 10 shots—six of which were on goal, gave the Mountain Hawks a 3-1 lead at 44:14. Three-and-a-half minutes later, freshman Morgan Christopher increased Lehigh’s lead when she found the cage off a Mel Lepko pass. Sophomore Jennifer Cochran sealed the victory for the Mountain Hawks when she scored off a pass from Smith.
Lehigh outshot the Hoyas 24-16 and had a 12-5 advantage in penalty corners. Senior Stephanie Palmieri recorded eight saves throughout the game, including one off her helmet at a critical point in the second half.
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Wednesday, September 13 when they play in their first home game of the 2006 season. Lehigh will host the UMBC Retrievers at 7:00 pm at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The game will be broadcast live online at lehighsports.com with streaming audio and video powered by Yahoo!
