BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Two teams searching for their first win in 2009 will meet on Saturday as Lehigh wraps up its season-opening three-game road trip with a trip to Smithfield, R.I. to face the Bryant Bulldogs. The Mountain Hawks are looking to bounce back from a 5-0 loss to West Chester on Wednesday, an game in which Lehigh took away several positives despite the final outcome.
The Mountain Hawks (0-2) did everything right in the first half of Wednesday’s game at West Chester – except put the ball in the back of the cage. Lehigh controlled the shots and had solid possession, but simply could not produce any goals. The host Golden Rams scored twice early in the second half and Lehigh, despite an overall advantage in shots, was unable to recover.
Freshman Kim Eng led Lehigh with eight shots on Wednesday and has one of the Mountain Hawks two goals this season, with senior Morgan Christopher owning the other. Lehigh’s defensive effort was aided by a strong game by junior Taryn Hartzell and a pair of defensive saves by junior Claire Horn.
Bryant also enters Saturday’s game at 0-2 after dropping its season-opener at Maine 4-0 and falling to Hofstra 3-2 on Monday. The Bulldogs were 2-16 last season in their first year at the Division I level. Courtney Landi and Katherine Andrusin have accounted for Bryant’s two goals this season, while Kundayi Mawema has played all 140 minutes in the goal cage for the Bulldogs.
Like last year, Lehigh hopes the third-time is a charm when it squares off with Bryant on Saturday. Last year, the Mountain Hawks started the year 0-2 and rolled past the Bulldogs 4-1 in game number three for their first win. Sophomore Madison Ingal scored twice in last year’s game to lead the Mountain Hawks.
Saturday’s game gets underway at 1 p.m. from Bryant’s Turf Field. The Mountain Hawks are scheduled to open their home schedule on Saturday, September 12 against Georgetown.
