BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh head coach Julie Mazer has announced the addition of seven student-athletes, who will join the Mountain Hawks field hockey program in the fall. Speed and athleticism are once again key components of the incoming class, which also includes a heavy focus on bolstering the Mountain Hawks’ efforts in the attacking half of the field, with all seven members of the class having the potential to contribute in the midfield or on the forward line.
“Speed and goal-scoring were two areas we focused heavily on,” said Mazer, who enters her seventh season. “Across the board, we’ve brought in a group that can do a little bit of everything. We think this class brings solid fundamental skills and we’re excited to see how they can progress and develop and take their games to the next level.”
Kimberly Eng comes to Lehigh from Morristown, New Jersey after a stellar career at Madison High School, where she played for Ann Marie Davies. The 2008 Morris County Player of the Year, Eng racked up 40 goals and 25 assists in her senior season and led her team in scoring in each of her last two years. Eng played for the same high school team as current Mountain Hawk Lilia Stefaniwsky and plays her club hockey for The Edge, which also produced current Mountain Hawks Stefaniwsky, Katey Fardelmann and Madison Ingal. She participated in the Futures Program as well as the National Hockey Festival and National Indoor Tournament.
The first of four incoming players from Pennsylvania, Kendal Fletcher hails from Ephrata, where she attends Ephrata High School. A midfielder, Fletcher was a two-time Lancaster/Lebanon League All-Star and served as captain of her high school team. She plays her club hockey for Sutter’s Brigade and her team won the pool I championship at the 2008 National Hockey Festival.
Coming to Lehigh from Coppell, Texas is midfielder/forward Brittany Johnson, who played for coach Heather Farlow at the Greenhill School, the same school that produced rising Lehigh senior Morgan Christopher. A four-year varsity starter, Johnson captained her team as a senior and led the team in assists in each of her final two seasons. Johnson plays her club hockey for Team Gateway Southwest and participated in the Futures Program as well as the National Hockey Festival.
The class of 2013 features two younger sisters of rising Lehigh seniors. Melissa Kuhns comes from Crestwood High School in White Haven, Pennsylvania, where she played for Elvetta Gemski. The sister of Julie Kuhns, “Millie” plays her club hockey for Majestyx and has participated in both the Futures Program and the USFHA National Festival, where her club won a pool B championship in 2007. Kuhns has also been recognized for her work in the classroom as she was named to the PHSFHCA and the NFHCA Academic Squads.
The third in a line of Smith sisters who have donned the Brown and White, Carly Smith attended Downingtown West High School in Downingtown, Pennsylvania. The sister of former standout Christy ’08 and current Mountain Hawk Lindsey ’10, Carly was a two-time All-Area selection and a four-time member of the All-Chester-Montgomery Team. Smith played in the Philadelphia Area Senior All-Star Game in 2008 and plays her club hockey for the Typhoons. She was also a four-year participant in the Futures Program.
A two-time first team All-State performer, Lauren Schweighoffer arrives in Bethlehem from Farmington High School in Connecticut. A team captain in both field hockey and lacrosse, Schweighoffer was her high school team’s MVP in field hockey and was named to the All-Herald and All-Courant teams. Schweighoffer participated in the National Hockey Festival with her club team, the Connecticut Revolution.
Rounding out the Class of 2013 is midfielder Kelsey Zeswitz from Warwick High School in Lititz, Pennsylvania. Zeswitz was coached by Bob Derr in the same program that produced current Lehigh goalkeeper Jess Miller. She was a second team Lancaster/Lebanon League All-Star and an Academic All-Star. Zeswitz plays for Sutter’s Brigade and participated in the N.I.T. as well as the National Hockey Festival. She also was a three-year participant in the Keystone Winter Games.
“Across the board I’m pleased with this incoming class,” explains Mazer. “This group is strong, both academically and athletically and I feel like they can make a significant impact on our program throughout their four years here.”
This incoming class joins a core of 21 returning players for the Mountain Hawks in 2009. Lehigh will be looking to return to the Patriot League tournament after a one-year hiatus.
