Mountain Hawks finish up fall season on Sunday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women’s tennis team finished up its fall season with two rounds of singles matches on the final day of the Lehigh Fall Tennis Championships Sunday on the Ulrich Varsity Courts. The Mountain Hawks opened the day against Delaware where the Fightin’ Blue Hens swept six singles matches, but Lehigh later rebounded to win four of six matches against Fordham.
“The most important thing from this weekend was that our freshmen were able to go out and get the nerves out,” said Lehigh head coach Dave Shook. “We showed that we have some talented players.”
After a rough go against Delaware Sunday morning, Lehigh bounced back in the final round of matches on the weekend, with three wins in five matches against Fordham. Senior Stacey Reich won convincingly over Taylor Holt 6-2, 6-1, while junior Kiera Murasko-Blank also enjoyed a straight set win over Jane Carroll. The final match of the day saw senior Julie Arthofer fight off two second-set match points to rally and defeat Martina Featherston in a third set super tiebreak in a battle of top singles players.
Lehigh also got a win from sophomore Izzy Breit who beat Brittany Russell of Fordham in earlier action.
“It was good to see Julie Arthofer get a win against Fordham’s top player,” said Shook. “I also thought Patricia Muething showed some good growth. Today was probably the best she played in the entire fall season.”
The Mountain Hawks will now be off until they open their spring season in late January.
