Lehigh and Army battle to scoreless draw

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh out-shot Army by a commanding 21-6 margin on the night but neither team was able to find the back of the net as the Mountain Hawks and Black Knights battled to a scoreless draw in the Patriot League opener for both teams Friday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Senior Liz Carlos led the way with seven shots, but a pair of Army goalkeepers totaled six saves on the night, while Lehigh’s Lauren Mains made three saves to post her fifth shutout of the season.
With the draw Lehigh moves to 6-2-2 overall, while Army is now 5-4-2. Both teams are 0-0-1 within the league with one point in the league standings.
Despite an eight day layoff, the Mountain Hawks started the game strong with a number of quality chances in the opening 20 minutes. Junior Glynn Fitzer put a pair of early chances wide, while Carlos banged a shot off the post following a short corner kick. Lehigh kept the pressure on, but was unable to score in the first half, despite a 9-2 advantage in shots.
“It was frustrating to create that many chances in the first 15-20 minutes and not finish,” explained Lehigh head coach Manny Oudin. “We couldn’t play much better than we did in the first 20 minutes. We did everything except finish.”
Lehigh kept the pressure on in the second half, out-shooting the Black Knights 12-2 in the period, but Monica Lee, who replaced Alex Lostetter at halftime, made four saves to keep the game scoreless after 90 minutes.
Neither team created many chances in the 20 minutes of overtime, with Army registering the only two shots. Mains made a diving save on Deanna Clegg in the 95th minute, while Elizabeth Betterbed headed a corner kick over the crossbar in the second overtime.
Carlos out-shot Army by herself 7-6, while Fitzer added four shots and senior Natalie Hojnacki took three shots for the Mountain Hawks. Betterbed was credited with two of Army’s six shots.
“Defensively we did well to limit them to just a few chances,” said Oudin. “We had too many gaps early on, but we did a much better job as the match progressed.”
The Mountain Hawks will return to the pitch on Monday when they play host to Columbia. Game time is set for 7 p.m. from the Ulrich Sports Complex. The game will be broadcast online at Lehighsports.com with Steve Lomangino and Jeff Tourial providing the commentary.
