Mountain Hawks play Columbia to 1-1 draw

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Sophomore Megan Cain put Lehigh in front with a goal in the 30th minute, but visiting Columbia tied the game late in the second half, and after 110 minutes of soccer the Mountain Hawks and Lions played to a 1-1 draw Monday in a non-league match-up at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Both teams used the match as a tune-up for critical league games this weekend, as a total of 39 players saw the field. The Mountain Hawks now stand at 6-2-3 on the season, while Columbia is now 4-5-2.
“I was a little concerned about how we would come out after playing 110 minutes Friday night (versus Army,” explained Lehigh head coach Manny Oudin. “We came out with the same energy and commitment so I was pleased about that.”
Cain picked up her first goal of the season 30 minutes into the contest when she took a pass from junior Glynn Fitzer and tucked a shot from the far side of the box inside the near post. Lehigh took a 1-0 lead into halftime with the teams even in shots (four) and corner kicks (one).
Columbia picked up the pressure in the second half, out-shooting Lehigh by a 14-2 margin in the period. With just under ten minutes remaining, the Lions created a flurry in front of the Lehigh goal. Nora Dooley’s initial shot was cleared off the goal line by senior defender Hailey Coonrad, but Ashlin Yahr knocked the loose ball past goalkeeper Lauren Means to tie the game with her sixth goal of the season in the 82nd minute.
The teams continued to battle into overtime with Columbia owning a 5-2 advantage in shots in the 20 minutes of extra time and a commanding 23-8 edge in shots for the night. The Lions also owned a 6-1 lead in corner kicks.
With the visitors pressing in the second half and overtime, Mains did her part finishing with seven saves, while Columbia’s Lindsay Danielson was credited with one save, on a rolling shot from Cain in the first overtime period.
“It was disappointing to give up the goal,” said Oudin. “But we responded well. We competed well against a very tough opponent to play against. We’ll take the result and get ready for a big league match against Colgate.”
Sophie Reiser led Columbia with seven shots and Yahr added six. Junior Lena Cannon led Lehigh with three shots, while Cain had the Mountain Hawks only two shots on goal.
The Mountain Hawks resume Patriot League play on Friday when they return to action against Colgate. Game time is set for 7 p.m. from Van Doren Field in Hamilton, N.Y.
