No. 17 Princeton proves too strong for Lehigh

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh knew it had its hands full with No. 17 Princeton on Wednesday evening and the Tigers showed why they’re one of the nation’s top teams as they picked up a convincing 11-1 win over the Mountain Hawks at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The Tigers dominated from the opening whistle, scoring eight times in the opening half and out-shooting Lehigh 44-1 on the evening as they improve to 3-0 with the victory. The Mountain Hawks fall to 1-3 with the setback.
“You have to give Princeton credit, they played a tremendous game,” said Lehigh head coach Julie Mazer. “They did not make many mistakes, while we didn’t execute our game plan. We had some good individual efforts, but it’s tough to compete with a team that was as in-sync as they were tonight.”
Kathleen Sharkey led the Tigers with three goals and an assist, while Holly McGarvie added two goals and an assist. Nine different Princeton players scored goals and 12 different Tigers recorded a point on the evening. Princeton opened the scoring with a McGarvie goal 2:46 into the contest, and the Tigers led 4-0 after 15 minutes and 8-0 at intermission.
Junior Kelly Fox helped Lehigh avoid a shutout as she scored her second goal of the season, with an assist from sophomore Katy Watters with just over a minute to play.
In addition to its commanding advantage in shots, Princeton held a 13-0 advantage in corners. The Tigers only faced one Lehigh shot and it resulted in Fox’s goal.
Sophomore Jessica Miller made a career-high 15 saves in 35 minutes of playing time, while classmate Lilia Stefaniwsky made four stops in the second half for the Mountain Hawks. Sophomore Taryn Hartzell also added three defensive saves for the Brown and White, giving her five for the season.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Friday when they travel to College Park, Maryland to face Georgetown. The game gets underway at 7 p.m. from the campus of the University of Maryland.
