Fox's big night powers Lehigh to road win

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Junior Kelly Fox netted her first career hat-trick to lead Lehigh to a 4-1 victory over Georgetown, Friday night in a game played at the Maryland Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. Fox scored the first three goals of the game to help the Mountain Hawks bounce back from Wednesday’s home loss to Princeton and give Lehigh its second win of the season.

“We played a good game,” said Lehigh head coach Julie Mazer. “We came out and played as a team and did well to take advantage of our opportunities in a game that was back and forth for quite some time. We passed and possessed the ball much better and were more organized on the defensive end.”

Fox opened the scoring at the 15:39 mark as she took a pass from sophomore Taryn Hartzell and banked a shot off the pads of Hoya goalkeeper Deirdre Crovo.

Lehigh (2-3) led just 1-0 at the break, but wasted little time extending its lead after halftime. Right off the opening pass back Fox and classmate Lindsey Smith worked the ball down the field in tandem, resulting in Fox’s second goal of the game just 11 seconds into the period. Fox completed her offensive outburst with an unassisted goal in the 58th minute. She now has five goals on the season and has scored in each of Lehigh’s last three games. The hat trick was the first for a Lehigh player since senior Kalynn Davies scored three against Georgetown last season.

Georgetown scored its only goal of the night at 60:16 as Kristen Volpe, the younger sister of former Mountain Hawk Lauren Volpe ’08 scored her second goal of the year, but Lehigh capped the scoring with a goal from Davies off a penalty corner with just over five minutes to play. Smith and senior Kara Zweizig assisted on the final tally.

Lehigh finished with a 16-13 advantage in shots, while Georgetown held a 6-4 edge in penalty corners. Sophomore Lilia Stefaniwsky made her first career start in the goal cage and made eight saves.

“I’m pleased with the overall effort tonight,” added Mazer. “There are still some things to work on, but we will look to build on this win going into next week’s games.”

The Mountain Hawks will be back on the turf on Wednesday, when they return home to face the Red Flash of Saint Francis (Pa.). Game time is set for 7 p.m. from the Ulrich Sports Complex, and all the action can be seen on Lehighsports.com with streaming powered by Yahoo! Sports College Broadcast.
