BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh earned its second consecutive win with an 11-5 victory over Delaware State on Tuesday on the Goodman Campus.  Andy Russell led the offensive charge, with a three-for-five day at the plate, driving in three runs.  Russell also scored three runs and fell a triple shy of the cycle.  The win puts Lehigh’s record at 18-22 on the year, while the Hornets fall to 11-22.

“Russell really gave us a big boost in the first inning with that homerun,” said head coach Sean Leary.  “Once we got the offense going, we used the running game to keep the pressure on, and our pitching staff did the rest for us.  We had three pitchers allow just one run in eight innings of work, with [Andrew] Grim doing an outstanding job in the start.  These were a good couple of wins for us [NJIT and Delaware State] and we’re hoping to keep the momentum going into this weekend.”

The Mountain Hawks started the scoring early, putting the first two runners of the game aboard, then Russell brought them home with a three-run homer that stayed just inside of the right field foul pole.

Joe Ercolano made it a 4-0 game in the bottom of the third on a solo homerun over the fence in right center, his fourth of the season.  The Mountain Hawks put three more runs on the board the next inning with Billy Swenson, Ercolano and Billy Goldman all picking up RBI in the inning.

The Hornets got their first runs of the game in the top of the fifth on a bases clearing triple from Troy Drummond, to cut Lehigh’s lead to 7-3.  Delaware State added two more runs in the inning, as the Mountain Hawks took a 7-5 lead into the bottom half of the fifth.  Lehigh got one run back in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by Logan Marshall that just made it past a diving Jose Sanchez at shortstop to score Russell.

The Mountain Hawks added three more runs in the seventh and eighth innings to pick up their 18th win of the season.

Grim (3-1) earned the win, allowing just one hit in three shutout innings in the start.  Billy Alec and Geoff Campbell combined to pitch the final five innings, and gave up one run on five hits.

Lehigh returns to the diamond this weekend when it travels to West Point, N.Y. for a four-game series against the Black Knights.  Saturday’s doubleheader can be heard live on Lehighsports.com, with streaming provided by Yahoo! Sports.
