BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Mike Lebo pitched a complete game, scattering four hits over one run to lead the Mountain Hawks to a 5-1 win over NJIT on Tuesday afternoon on the Goodman Campus. Lebo (1-1) struck out seven batters while walking just two as he picked up his first career win. With the win Lehigh is now 17-22 on the year, while NJIT falls to 2-29.
“I thought Lebo pitched outstanding for us on the mound,” said head coach Sean Leary. “He worked ahead in the counts and really did a great job of using his defense behind him. We executed well offensively early, and it was just an all-around solid effort.”
In the bottom of the first, Lehigh took advantage of a two-out error by the right fielder Tom Farinia, which allowed Brendan McGaheran to reach second base. Andy Russell brought McGaheran home with a triple over the center fielder’s head, to tie the game at 1-1. Joe Bellini drove Russell home with a single into left field and the Mountain Hawks had a 2-1 lead after one inning of play.
Liam O’Connor led off the next inning with a single up the middle and moved up to second on a balk by starting pitcher P.J. Saporito. Greg Turcotte picked up his first career RBI on a single through the right side of the infield to score O’Connor. Turcotte then came around to score two batters later on a sac fly to center field by Joe Ercolano, to increase Lehigh’s lead to 4-1.
The Mountain Hawks added one more run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI groundout by O’Connor to score Russell and give Lehigh the 5-1 win. Russell ended the day three-for-four at the plate with a pair of runs scored and an RBI.
Saporito (1-8) was hit with the loss despite giving up just two earned runs in five innings of work.
