Ercolano sets hits record in split with Lafayette

In the first game, the Leopards scored the first run of the game on a sac fly to left by Chris Luick, to score Rob Froio. Lehigh responded in the bottom half of the inning with two runs of its own. Ercolano led off the inning with a single down the left field line, his 206th career hit, tying Jesse Novalis ’04 atop the Lehigh record books.
Ercolano then stole second, and came around to score on a single by Billy Goldman to tie the game at 1-1. Goldman advanced to third on the play on an error by center fielder Froio. Andy Russell put the Mountain Hawks up on a groundout to the right side of the infield that allowed Goldman to score.
The Mountain Hawks added two more runs in the next inning, on RBI from Billy Swenson and Joe Bellini to go up 4-1. The score remained that way till the sixth when Russell launched a solo homerun down the right field line, his second of the season.
Kevin Resse (3-3) was given the loss, pitching 5.1 innings, allowing all five runs on six hits, while striking out just two.
In the second, Ercolano led off the bottom of the first with his record-breaking hit, a single through the right side of the infield. However, the Leopards took over after that, scoring three runs in the top of third. Luick hit another sac fly to left field to score Froio to pick up their first run of the game. Tom Ambrosole followed that up with an RBI double to left field. The next batter, Jeff Butler, knocked a single up the middle to score Ambrosole.
Kevin Mihalik (2-3) was hit with the loss, pitching four innings, giving up five runs on seven hits. Andrew Grim relieved Mihalik in the fifth, and pitched five shutout innings to keep the Mountain Hawks in the game.
Jeremy Atkins (4-2) pitched a complete game shutout for the Leopards, allowing seven hits while striking out five.
The teams will finish out their four game series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at noon from the baseball field on the Goodman Campus.
