Lehigh wins in shootout over Air Force

PALM BEACH, Fla. – In a wild back and forth affair, Lehigh was able to hold on for a 15-14 win over Air Force Friday afternoon in Palm Beach, Fla.  The two teams combined for seven homeruns in the game, including a season high three from the Mountain Hawks.  Freshman Billy Goldman led the offensive charge with a three-run homerun and five RBI on the day, to increase his team lead to 12.  Lehigh improves to 6-6 with the win, while the Falcons fall to 2-6.

 

Air Force got on the board first, with three runs in the top of the second.  K.J. Randhawa drove in two of those runs, with a single to left center.  The Mountain Hawks answered back with a four runs in the bottom half of the inning.  Billy Swenson started the scoring with an RBI double to center field, bringing home Austin Borden.  Logan Marshall picked up one of his career high four RBI on the day, with a single back at the pitcher.  Goldman drove in the final two runs on a single to left center, scoring Swenson and Marshall. 

 

The Falcons did not wait long to respond, scoring thee more runs in the top of the third, to take a 6-4 lead.  Lehigh added another run in the bottom of the third, to cut its deficit to 6-5.

 

The Mountain Hawks tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a sac fly to right field by Joe Ercolano, plating Liam O’Connor.  The Brown and White took the lead back in the next half inning, scoring three runs on a three-run homerun down the right field line by Marshall.  Lehigh added another run the bottom of the sixth on a solo homer by Ercolano, his first of the season, as the Mountain Hawks took a 10-6 lead after six.

 

Air Force attempted to make a comeback, scoring two runs in the top of the seventh, but the Mountain Hawks rallied for five runs in the bottom half of the inning, capped off by a three-run shot to right field by Goldman.

 

The Falcons made the game interesting, scoring three runs in the eighth and ninth innings, but Andrew Grim came in to strike out the last batter of the game to earn his first save of the season.

 

Joe Matteo (2-0) got the start on the mound, striking out nine batters over 6.1 innings, to earn his second win of the season.  Alex Truesdale (0-2) was credited with the loss, pitching 6.1 innings, giving up 13 earned runs on 17 hits.

 

The Mountain Hawks are back in action tomorrow morning for their final game of the Palm Beach Challenge, facing Penn at 10 a.m.
