Hall's career night not enough as Lehigh falls

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Sophomore Marquis Hall scored a career-high 29 points, but it wasn’t enough as Lehigh fell to Colgate 71-63 on Wednesday evening at Cotterell Court. Hall was the lone Mountain Hawk to hit for double figures, as Lehigh falls to 12-13 overall and 5-6 in the Patriot League, while Colgate, who placed three players in double figures, led by Kyle Roemer’s 18 tallies, improves to 13-13 overall and 5-7 in league action.
“Unfortunately we were just a little inconsistent in the whole and as a result, we wound up falling short,” Lehigh head coach Brett Reed said afterwards. “We were trying to establish some momentum (as the first half came to a close), but weren’t able to until later in the game. At the same token, we squandered some of our own opportunities and some of our looks were forced.”
Reed then commented on the play of Hall. “Marquis is a very special individual; the most important thing to him is winning and none of his personal accolades are what matter to him, it’s the level of success that this team achieves.
Lehigh shot 39 percent from the field, including a 45 percent mark in the opening half, while Colgate connected on 48 percent of its field goal attempts. The Mountain Hawks grabbed 34 rebounds, led by senior Bryan White’s six, and the Raiders pulled down 33 boards, led by Alex Woodhouse with 13 to go along with 12 points. Lehigh hit 15-of-21 shots from the free throw line, but hit only 4-of-16 shots from three-point range, while Colgate sank 50 percent from downtown (7-14) and hit 16-of-21 foul shots.
Joining Roemer in double figures was Kendall Chones with 14 points and Woodhouse, while Daniel Waddy handed out a team-best five helpers.
Colgate jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the first 4:18 following a lay up by Roemer, but Lehigh came back and got to within four on a jumper from Matt Szalachowski at the 10:21 mark of the opening half. A three-pointer by freshman Mike Venezia put the home team up nine at the 6:54 mark of the half, but from there Lehigh ripped off 11 straight to go in front 33-31 with 4:34 left in the opening half. Colgate retook the lead however, when Trevaron Vinson hit a lay up and Daniel Waddy drilled a three to make it a 36-35 game with 49 ticks to go. Another three-pointer by Tim Pounds as the first half came to an end put the Raiders in front 39-35 at the half.
A lay up by Chones put Colgate up ten with 17:13 to go and a lay up from Pounds on he next possession made Lehigh’s deficit a dozen. Lehigh closed to within nine with 13:25 to go on a free throw from Hall and got to within single digits again when White sank a pair at the charity stripe. Szalachowski then hit a jumper that made the score 53-46 Colgate, but Roemer answered with yet another trifecta to make it a ten-point affair. A three-point play by Hall got the Mountain Hawks to within seven and a lay up from classmate Dave Buchberger brought the visitors to within five at 56-51.
Colgate was able to maintain its lead, but Lehigh did close to within four points on two occasions, the last coming with 51 seconds to go, but that was as close as the Mountain Hawks would get, as their two-game winning streak in Hamilton came to a close.
