Mountain Hawks open spring season with split

In Saturday’s opening match, Lehigh won just one doubles match and two singles matches against Radford. Furman defeated Mirna Matic in a third tiebreaker set at fourth singles, while sophomore newcomer Stacey Reich also picked up a singles win playing at No. 6. Furman and junior Victoria Vityuk picked up Lehigh’s lone doubles win with an 8-4 win at the third flight.
After Radford beat Marist in the day’s middle match, the Mountain Hawks and Red Foxes battled in a lengthy, tightly contested affair. With doubles action knotted at one, Lehigh sealed the doubles point when Reich and senior Alexis Jaocbi defeated Christine Ong and Mirelva Colon 8-4 at No. 2 doubles.
Furman added a straight set win over Natalie Fouche, and Lehigh appeared on its way to a rout, but the Mountain Hawks could not hold on to one set leads at second or third singles. The Red Foxes took a 3-2 lead with 10-point tiebreak wins at the top three flights, but Vityuk earned a convincing 6-2, 6-1 win over Jeannie Lukin at fifth singles, and then Reich capped off her first day of varsity tennis action with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win over Retta Byron at sixth singles.
There is little time for rest for the Mountain Hawks, who will be back on the court on Sunday when they welcome Fairleigh Dickinson to the
