Mountain Hawks suffer 2-1 setback at Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell’s Kelly Bruvik scored off a penalty corner with just under 90 seconds to play to lead the Bison past Lehigh 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Graham Field. The Mountain Hawks scored first and enjoyed a 1-0 lead at halftime, but Bucknell scored twice in the final 35 minutes to send Lehigh to its sixth straight setback. The Brown and White are now 3-9 on the season and 0-2 in the Patriot League while Bucknell improves to 8-4 overall, 1-1 in league games.
“We did some things very well, but we were hurt by our inability to take care of the opportunities that we had,” said Lehigh head coach Julie Mazer. “We played with a lot of heart. We were more physical. We had strong play from the defense and from Lilia (Stefaniwsky) in the cage, but Bucknell was able to take advantage of its opportunities and that was the difference in the game.”
The Mountain Hawks jumped in front 19 minutes into the contest on an unassisted goal from senior Kalynn Davies, her third of the season and her second in as many league games. Lehigh was able to hold onto its lead throughout the first half, thanks to a strong defensive effort and seven first half saves from sophomore goalkeeper Lilia Stefaniwsky.
The Bison pulled even 14 minutes into the second half when Corrine Raczek scored her first goal of the season, on a feed from Sarah Ebright. Bucknell held a 5-0 edge in penalty corners in the second half, and produced the game-winning goal with 1:27 remaining as Bruvik netted her seventh goal of the year with Raczek and Amanda Faust picking up assists on the play.
Stefaniwsky was credited with saves on the afternoon; the third straight game she’s stopped at least ten shots. Bucknell enjoyed a 13-5 advantage in shots and a 12-3 edge in penalty corners. Bison goalkeepers Jessie Atieh and Sarah Zargarpour split time in the cage and combined to make two saves.
Lehigh will be back on the turf on Saturday when the Mountain Hawks return home for the first time in nearly a month to face arch rival Lafayette.
