BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Despite a strong defensive effort, Lehigh fell to arch rival Lafayette 2-0 Saturday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The Mountain Hawks were hampered by an inability to create consistent possession opportunities as they fall to 3-10 overall and 0-3 in the Patriot League. The visiting Leopards scored once in each half while holding a substantial statistical advantage in both shots and penalty corners. Lafayette improves to 10-5 overall and remains tied atop the Patriot League standings at 3-0 in the league.
“Our defense played well tonight,” said Lehigh head coach Julie Mazer. “They did a good job getting the ball out of the circle. Our inability to string together quality possessions really hurt us. The effort was good, but our execution was not.”
In the first half Lafayette controlled the possession, but the Mountain Hawk defense limited the Leopards to just five shots, three of which came in the final minutes. Lafayette took the lead with just over three and a half minutes remaining in the half. Shortly after a penalty corner, Jaclyn DiSanti found Maggie Condon open in the middle of the circle, and Condon delivered her league-leading 13th game of the season.
The Leopards extended their lead at the 53:21 mark as Meghan Cicchi redirected Condon’s drive off another penalty corner for her first goal of the season. Lehigh’s lone shot came on a Kalynn Davies drive off of Lehigh’s only penalty corner of the night.
Sophomore Jessica Miller played the first half in the goal cage for Lehigh and made four saves, before giving way to classmate Lilia Stefaniwsky, who stopped three Leopard shots. Cassie Willard added a defensive save for the Brown and White.
The Mountain Hawks will be back on the turf on Wednesday night when they host Columbia in a non-league match-up. Game time is set for 7 p.m. from the Ulrich Sports Complex and the game can be seen at Lehighsports.com with streaming powered by Yahoo! Sports College Broadcast.
