Mountain Hawks swept by Army in season finale

“We played hard in both games, especially the seniors on their last day playing for Lehigh,” said head coach Sean Leary. “In game one, we had great pitching from [freshman] Greg Angelo; we just couldn’t get one across the plate to get him the win. Even though we struggled throughout the season, the guys put forth the effort where it should be in every game.”
A double down the left field line by Barnes Connell allowed Andy Ernesto to score from second to give Army a 1-0 lead midway through the third inning in the first game. Lehigh responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning to even the score. With two outs and runners at the corners, junior Liam O’Connor singled through the left side to drive in senior Stephen Salemme.
The game remained tied until the top of the eighth when Army had one out and runners on the corners. Chris Simmons reached on fielder’s choice that allowed Connell to score the eventual game-winning run.
Sophomore Greg Mortka was on the mound for one inning picked up the loss after he allowed the game-winning run. Cole White was awarded the win after he allowed one run off three hits and recorded six strikeouts in seven innings of work. Milan Dinga earned his second save of the weekend after fanning two batters in the final inning.
In the second game, it was Lehigh who got onto the scoreboard first. The Mountain Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when senior David Moscow scored of a sacrifice fly by sophomore Michael Laychur.
Army’s offense came alive in the fourth inning when the Black Knights totaled three runs off four hits to take a 3-1 advantage, but the Mountain Hawks came back to even the score with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.
However, the Black Knights broke the tie with a three-run seventh inning and then added another run in the eighth to take a 7-3 lead.
Senior Joel Hockman picked up the loss. In 6.1 innings, Hockman struck out four of the 29 batters he faced, but allowed five runs off seven hits. Ben Meyhew pitched 3.1 innings, struck out three and allowed no runs and one hit for his first win of the season.
