BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Freshman Billy Swenson hit his first collegiate grand slam on Sunday as Lehigh split its doubleheader with Bucknell on the Goodman Campus.  The Mountain Hawks fell 3-2 in the first game, but rebounded in the second with a 9-5 victory, which we their first Patriot League win of the 2007 campaign.  Lehigh’s record now stands at 10-12-1 on the season and 1-3 in league play, while Bucknell is 10-11 overall and 3-1 in the league.

“We played well in both games and had to show our mental toughness today,” said head coach Sean Leary.  “In the second game, [freshman] Greg Angelo did an outstanding job.”

In the first game, senior David Moscow’s sacrifice bunt in the second inning allowed sophomore Matt Reitz to score and give Lehigh a 1-0 lead.

Bucknell did not trail for long as the Bison hit three back-to-back doubles, including a two-run double to left center by Jason Buursma that allowed Bucknell to take a 2-1 lead.  Buursma added the Bison’s third run of the inning when he scored of a single by Mark Angelo.

Lehigh pulled to within one in the sixth when junior Joe Ercolano scored off a Liam O’Connor double, but that would be as close as Lehigh would get as the Mountain Hawks stranded three runners in the seventh.

Senior Joel Hockman picked up the loss after pitching 3.2 innings.  Hockman struck out one batter, but allowed three runs off eight hits.  Mathew Wilson was awarded the win as he recorded five strikeouts and allowed two runs in 6.1 innings of work.

Bucknell’s Dane Grandizio started the second game with a lead-off double to left field and then scored when Ben Yoder smacked a double to left center as the Bison held a 1-0 advantage.

The Mountain Hawk offense came out strong in the bottom of the first as Ercolano scored off a Liam O’Connor single to make it a 1-1 game.  Then with bases load and one out, Swenson smacked his grand slam to give Lehigh a 5-1 lead.

A three-run third inning allowed Bucknell to move to within one of the Mountain Hawks, but Lehigh had two runs of its own in the bottom of the third to make the score 7-4.

Grandizio’s sacrifice fly in the sixth cut Lehigh’s led to two.  However, Reitz and freshman Patrick Groome scored runs in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, as the Mountain Hawks went on to win 9-5.

Greg Angelo earned his first collegiate win after pitching six innings.  Greg Angelo recorded four strikeouts and allowed just one run.  Sean Driscoll earned the loss after he allowed seven runs off six hits in two innings of work.

Lehigh returns to action on Tuesday afternoon when the Mountain Hawks host Temple in the semifinals of the Liberty Bell Classic.  The winner of Tuesday’s game will face the winner of the Lafayette-Penn semifinal in the Liberty Bell Classic final at Citizens Bank Park on April 10.  Game time for Tuesday’s game is set for 3:30 pm from the Goodman Campus.
