Another split for Lehigh on final day of Florida trip

The Mountain Hawks capitalized on a four-run second inning as they ended the spring break trip on a high note with a win over the Peahens.
Sophomore Lisa Sweeney opened the scoring with an RBI single, scoring classmate Whitney Lowe. Freshman catcher Lauren Eichblatt drove in two more runs with a triple and then scored on a single from junior Kate Marvel to make it 4-0 Lehigh.
In the third inning, Lehigh added an insurance run as Lowe tripled and scored on a single by senior Mendy Martin.
The five runs were plenty for Sweeney, who followed up Thursday’s no-hitter by allowing just one unearned run on two hits while striking out a season-high 11 Peahens to improve to 4-3 on the season. The Mountain Hawk bats pounded out ten hits, with Lowe smacking a pair, and eight other Lehigh players picking up one.
In Friday’s opening game, Lehigh and East Tennessee State combined for 18 runs and 22 hits, but three costly Mountain Hawk errors led to six of the Buccaneers ten runs being unearned. The Mountain Hawks trailed 6-1 after two innings and 10-4 after three, but battled back with four runs in the final three innings. Lehigh had the tying runs on base and the potential go-ahead run at the plate in the top of the seventh, but could not complete the comeback.
Senior Lauren Haney put Lehigh on top in the opening inning, with a base hit that scored freshman Amy Piccinich all the way from first on a textbook hit-and-run play. The Buccanneers however, scored five runs in the bottom of the frame and added a sixth in the bottom of the second inning,
Lehigh’s first comeback attempt started in the top of the third inning. Junior Taryn Hanley capped off three consecutive base hits with an RBI single, and three batters later senior Heather Hamasaki added a two-run double.
In the bottom of the frame, ETSU answered with four runs of its own, highlighted by a three run triple from Stephanie Gaynord.
The Mountain Hawks clawed back, with another RBI single from Haney in the fifth and three more runs in the seventh. Junior Megan Conrad plated the first run of the seventh with a hit, and Martin followed with a two run single. Lehigh had a chance to tie or take the lead, but Piccinich was struck out to end the game with runners on first and second.
Freshman Tiffany Curtis suffered the loss in the circle, allowing ten runs, but just four earned runs in five innings of work, while striking out six.
