3/22/2007 12:00:00 AM | Football

NEWARK, Del. – Lehigh returned to the diamond for the first time in nearly two weeks on Thursday and the Mountain Hawks picked up a win and a tie against Delaware at Delaware Field. The Mountain hawks rode the bat and right arm of sophomore Lisa Sweeney to a 4-3 win in game one, then rallied late to tie the nightcap 2-2, in a game that was called after six innings due to darkness. Lehigh now stands at 7-11-1 on the season, while Delaware is now 4-10-1.

Sweeney led the Mountain Hawks in game one, both at the plate and in the pitcher’s circle. She went 2-for-3 and drove in all four Lehigh runs, while limiting the Fightin’ Blue Hens to three runs on four hits in seven innings of work to improve to 5-3 on the season.

After leaving runners on base in each of the first three frames, Sweeney gave Lehigh the lead in the fourth inning with a bases clearing three-run triple. After Michelle Kenney homered for Delaware in the fourth, Sweeney provided an insurance run with a sixth inning single that scored Taryn Hanley.

Delaware added runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but Sweeney ended the game by fanning Katie Lee with the tying run on third base.

Lehigh out hit Delaware 11-4 in game one with Sweeney, seniors Mendy Martin and Julie Sterrett and junior Kate Marvel all enjoying multi-hit games.

Trailing 1-0 in game two, the Mountain Hawks tied the game in the fourth inning on an RBI single from senior Lauren Haney that scored sophomore Whitney Lowe. The Fightin’ Blue Hens regained the lead with a run in the fifth, but Lehigh rallied again to tie the game in the sixth. Martin drove home the tying run with an RBI single. After Delaware failed to score in the bottom half of the inning, the game was called and the teams settled for a tie.

Freshman Tiffany Curtis went all six innings in the circle, working around eight hits to allow just two runs while striking out nine.

The Mountain Hawks are scheduled to return to action on Saturday when they welcome Albany and Iona to Kaufman Field for the Lehigh Equinox, which will serve as Lehigh’s home opener. Game one pits Lehigh against Iona with first pitch scheduled for 10:00 am.
