BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh opened up its home schedule with a pair of victories on day one of the Lehigh Equinox Saturday afternoon at Kaufman Field. Junior Megan Conrad went 3-for-3 with two runs batted in, and freshman Tiffany Curtis tossed a two-hit shutout to lead the Mountain Hawks past Iona 8-0 in six innings in game one. Lehigh then pounded out 14 hits and scored eight times in the final two frames to knock off Albany 9-3 in the nightcap. With the victories, Lehigh is now 9-11-1 on the season.

In game one, the Mountain Hawks opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the third inning. Junior Kate Marvel led off the inning with a triple, and scored on a bunt hit from Conrad, who advanced to second with nobody covering the base. Conrad eventually came around to score when Gaels right fielder Nicole Kraemer dropped a fly ball off the bat of senior Julie Sterrett.

After adding a run in the fourth inning, the Brown and White plated four in the fifth on a pair of two-run doubles from junior Taryn Hanley and freshman Brooke Lewis. Conrad ended the game in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single that scored sophomore Kristyn Kubiak.

Curtis was strong in the circle, allowing just two singles from Iona first baseman Valerie Laschen, while striking out six and walking two to improve to 2-5 on the season. Becky Riccitelli took the loss for Iona as the Gaels fell to 4-6.

Through five innings, the Lehigh-Albany game was a pitchers duel between Mountain Hawk sophomore Lisa Sweeney and the Great Danes’ freshman Leah McIntosh. Lehigh, the designated visiting team, scored first in the fourth when sophomore Whitney Lowe hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Marvel, who hit her second three-base hit of the day. Albany tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run from Kat Smith.

The Mountain Hawks took the lead in the top of the sixth, when senior Heather Hamasaki hit a bloop single to shallow right field, scoring Whitney Schenbeck. Four of the next five Lehigh batters delivered RBI singles as Lehigh batted around in the frame. Seniors Lauren Haney and Julie Sterrett, plus Hanley and senior Mendy Martin all delivered base hits to give Lehigh a 6-1 lead.

The Brown and White added three more runs in the seventh on an RBI double from Haney, and singles from Sterrett and Sweeney.

In the circle, Sweeney (6-3) won her fifth straight decision, allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out six. McIntosh was charged with six runs in five and a third innings, and took the loss for Albany (10-5).

In Saturday’s middle game, Albany defeated Iona 7-4.

The Lehigh Equinox will conclude on Sunday with three more games from Kaufman Field. Lehigh will face Albany at 10:00 am and Iona at 2:00 pm, with the Great Danes and Gaels meeting at noon.
