Sweeney no-hits Penn; Lehigh settles for split

3/8/2007 5:00:00 PM | Softball

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Sophomore Lisa Sweeney pitcher her second no-hitter in five days to lead Lehigh to a 3-1 win over Penn in the Mountain Hawks first game of the day at the Rebel Spring Games on Thursday. Lehigh had to settle for a split for the third straight day, as the Mountain Hawks were edged by Valparaiso 2-1 in game two. The Mountain Hawks are now 5-10 on the season, with two more games remaining in Florida.

Sweeney allowed a first inning unearned run to the Quakers, but was dominant thereafter, striking out five and walking one to improve to 3-3 on the season. The no-hitter is her second of the season, and fourth of her career.

Lehigh erased a one run deficit in the third inning, as junior Megan Conrad came around to score the tying run on a throwing error from Penn pitcher Olivia Mauro. Following a sacrifice bunt, freshman Amy Piccinich hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Sweeney to give the Mountain Hawks a 2-1 lead.

The Mountain Hawks added an insurance run in the sixth inning on an RBI single from senior Heather Hamasaki that scored junior Taryn Hanley from second base. Hamasaki delivered two of Lehigh’s five hits in the ballgame, and leads the team with nine hits in ten games on this current spring break trip.

Penn falls to 4-4 with the loss.

In game two, Valparaiso broke a 1-1 tie with a bases loaded, pinch hit single from Beth Adamski off of Lehigh senior Stefanie Forlenza in the sixth inning. Forlenza allowed just two runs while striking out eight as she falls to 0-2 on the season.

After falling behind 1-0 after three innings, Lehigh tied the game in the fifth inning when senior Whitney Schenbeck executed a squeeze bunt and reached on a fielder’s choice, allowing Hamasaki to score from third.

Valparaiso (5-3) out hit Lehigh 7-5 on the afternoon. Senior Lauren Haney was 2-for-2 at the plate for the Brown and White against the Crusaders.

The Mountain Hawks will wrap up play at the Rebel Spring Games on Friday, with games against East Tennessee State at 9:00 am and St. Peter’s at 1:00 pm.
