Lehigh blanks Lafayette for first league win

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh picked up its first Patriot League win of the season on Saturday night, with a 2-0 blanking of rival Lafayette at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The Mountain Hawks fought through first half offensive frustrations with a pair of second half goals, as Lehigh snaps its five game winless streak and improves to 6-6-3 overall and 1-2-1 in the league. Lafayette falls to 4-11 with the loss, and the Leopards are 0-4 in league play.

The Mountain Hawks dominated statistically, out shooting the Leopards 26-6 and earning all seven corner kicks in the match. Lehigh unleashed 13 shots in the opening half but were unable to find the back of the net. Early in the half senior Melissa Montalvo found herself alone one against one with the keeper, but Lafayette’s Mary Kate Erdman dropped her left hand down to save the low shot. Later in the half, sophomore Liz Carlos found herself open at the top of the box, but her shot glanced off the crossbar and over for a goal kick.

In the 60th minute, Lehigh finally pushed ahead when Erdman was unable to handle a centering pass from freshman Glynn Fitzer. Carlos tapped in the loose ball for her team-leading fourth goal of the season to put Lehigh up 1-0.

Lehigh added an insurance goal with just over five minutes to play, when senior Jen Fetsick collected the ball in the box after a corner and fired a shot to the bottom left corner for her third goal of the year. Montalvo and senior Anndrea Yetter were credited with assists on the play. Fetsick led the charge offensively for Lehigh with 10 shots, including four on goal.

“In the big picture, this was an important win for us,” said Lehigh head coach Manny Oudin. “We needed to get three points out of this game, and we were able to do so. It’s frustrating to have so many chances and not finish them, but we did get a league win at home and that should help us as we get ready for next week.”

Erdman did her part to keep the Leopards in the game, with eight saves. Offensively, Lafayette only had six shots and only one on goal. Junior Julie Kafka and freshman Lauren Mains combined on Lehigh’s sixth shutout of the season, with Mains making the only save of the night for the Brown and White.

The win ties Lehigh with Navy for fourth place in the league standings. The Midshipmen will face first place American on Sunday.

The Mountain Hawks will return to the pitch on Friday when they visit Bucknell. Game time is set for 7 p.m. from Lewisburg, Pa.
