Mountain Hawks hand Bucknell first league loss

10/26/2007 9:15:00 PM | Women's Soccer

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Senior Jen Fetsick scored twice to help hand Bucknell its first Patriot League loss of the season; as the Mountain Hawks knocked off the Bison 3-1 on a rainy Friday night at the Varsity Soccer Field. Lehigh picks up its second straight league win and improves to 7-6-3 overall, and 2-2-1 in the Patriot League, while Bucknell is now 8-7-0 overall and 4-1-0 in league games.

Fetsick provided the only score of the first half in the 39th minute when she headed in a cross from freshman Lena Cannon at close range for her fourth goal of the season. She struck again just over five minutes into the second half as she found herself wide open at the left post and tapped in a pass from sophomore Liz Carlos for her fifth goal of the season, and third in the last two games.

Faced with a 2-0 deficit, Bucknell rallied and cut Lehigh’s lead to one in the 56th minute as Kelliann Doherty beat freshman Lauren Mains with a hard shot from the middle of the box. The complexion of the game changed in the 68th minute as Bison goalkeeper Kathryn Sutton was issued a straight red card for a slide tackle on freshman Kelsey Lusardi. The sending off forced the Bison to play ten versus eleven, with leading scorer Jennifer Dervarics forced into emergency goalkeeping duty.

Lehigh tacked on an insurance goal with just over eight minutes to play, as Bison defender Nicole Marotta redirected a centering pass past Dervarics for an own goal.

Bucknell out shot Lehigh 15-14 on the night, including a 12-6 advantage after halftime, but the Mountain Hawks finished with an 11-3 edge in corner kicks.

Junior Julie Kafka made a pair of first half saves to earn the win in goal for Lehigh. Mains stopped three shots and allowed one goal in her 45 minutes of action. For Bucknell, Sutton finished with two saves while Dervarics was credited with one.

The win propels Lehigh into fourth place in the league standings with seven points. Sunday’s opponent, Colgate sits one point behind, while a key league game between Army and Navy was postponed due to heavy rains. The Black Knights are two points ahead of Lehigh in the standings, while the Mids are two points behind, but both teams now have a game in hand on the Mountain Hawks.

Lehigh will wrap-up its weekend road trip on Sunday when the Mountain Hawks travel to Colgate for a battle of teams trying to fight their way into the Patriot League tournament. Game time is set for 1 p.m. from Van Doren Field in Hamilton, N.Y.
