Holy Cross offense races past Lehigh

10/20/2007 12:00:00 AM | Football

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The high-powered Holy Cross offense erupted for 544 yards as the Crusaders dropped Lehigh to 0-2 in the Patriot League for the first time ever, with a convincing 59-10 victory on Alumni Day at Goodman Stadium. Crusader quarterback Dominic Randolph threw for 375 yards and three touchdowns, while the defense returned a pair of interceptions for scores. Lehigh falls to 3-4 overall, 0-2 in the league with the loss, while Holy Cross improves to 4-2, 2-0 in the league.

The 59 points were the most ever scored by a visiting team at Goodman Stadium, while the 49 point margin of defeat was the largest for Lehigh in the stadium’s 20 year history.

"The bottom line is Holy Cross came out and made plays today, and we did not," Lehigh head coach Andy Coen said afterwards.  "We did not come out and compete the way I know we're capable of and that is frustrating to me.  I put this one on my shoulders and I take full responsibility for that performance this afternoon.  That was not Lehigh football."

The Crusaders received the opening kickoff and drove 64 yards in eight plays. Randolph connected with Tom Harrison on an eight yard touchdown pass to open the scoring. After Lehigh punted on its opening possession, Holy Cross drove 86 yards, and Randolph and Harrison connected for a second time, this time on a 15 yard catch and run to put the Crusaders up 14-0 with five minutes to play in the opening quarter.

Lehigh answered Holy Cross’ second score by securing its first of the day. Junior Jason Leo capped off a nine play 54 yard drive with a 23 yard field goal to make it 14-3. The Crusaders wasted little time however, as on their next drive Terrance Gass raced 74 yards up the middle for Holy Cross’ third touchdown of the opening quarter.

A Jason Leo punt pinned the Crusaders at their own one yard line at the start of the second quarter, but Holy Cross marched 96 yards down to the Lehigh three yard line, before the Mountain Hawk defense buckled down and held the Crusaders to a 20 yard Matt Partain field goal, which made it 24-3 halfway through the second.

The Mountain Hawks finally put the ball in the end zone with half a minute to play in the first half. Faced with a fourth down, Leo kept the drive alive, rushing 27 yards on a fake punt. Threatt capped off the 66 yard drive with a 15 yard touchdown pass to junior Mike Fitzgerald, and Lehigh went into the locker room trailing 24-10.

Threatt finished the half 9-of-19 for 98 yards and a touchdown, and added 32 yards on eight carries. Junior Josh Pastore rushed for 37 yards, while Fitzgerald caught three passes for 46 yards. Randolph was very efficient, finishing the half 13-of-21 for 208 yard and the tow touchdown passes to Harrison, who finished the half with five grabs for 65 yards.

Holy Cross found the end zone again on its opening drive of the second half, as Gass capped off a 75 yard drive with his second touchdown run of the game, this one from seven yards out. The lead grew to 38-10 as Mike Kielt added a one yard touchdown run, capping off an 82 yard drive following a Threatt interception. Things got worse for the Brown and White when on the ensuing drive as Threatt was picked off by Kyle Mushaweh, who returned the interception 46 yards for the score.

In the fourth quarter, Holy Cross tacked on two more scores, with Randolph finding Maher for a 27 yard pass and then Daryl Brown picked off a pass from freshman J.B. Clark and ran it in for the game’s final score.

Threatt finished the game 12-of-25 for 146 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions, before giving way to sophomore Chris Bokosky and then Clark. Pastore finished with 43 yards on 12 carries while Fitzgerald finished with 66 yard on four grabs. Junior Tim Diamond was Lehigh’s top tackler with 15 total stops on the day.

For Holy Cross, Gass ran eight times for 97 yards, while Maher caught nine balls for 165 yards.

The Mountain Hawks return to the gridiron next Saturday when they play host to Georgetown on Family Weekend. Kick-off is scheduled for just after 1 p.m. and tickets can be purchased in one of three ways: by calling 610-7LU-GAME, by stopping by the Lehigh Athletics Ticket Office, located in Grace Hall, or by logging onto Lehighsports.com at anytime.

EXTRA POINTS…  After these two teams played in monsoon-like conditions each of the last two years, the game kicked off with sunny skies and a temperature of 67 degrees with 20 mile per hour winds… Lehigh’s 21 first quarter (and third quarter) points allowed were the most allowed in a quarter since the Mountain Hawks allowed 21 to Villanova in the second quarter of their 2006 meeting… the 59 points allowed were the most since Lehigh gave up 61 in a loss to Colgate in 1997… Lehigh’s previous worst loss at Goodman Stadium was a 55-16 loss to the Crusaders in 1989… The Mountain Hawks have lost three straight games for the first time since 1997 (Bucknell, Holy Cross, Delaware).
