BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Playing in its final non-league match of the season, Lehigh hung tough with a regionally-ranked Princeton squad, but an Alexandra Valerio goal in the 42nd minute proved to be the difference in a 1-0 Tigers win Wednesday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The win was the seventh in a row for Princeton, as the Tigers improve to 7-4-1 on the year. Lehigh falls to 5-6-3 overall with the setback.

“We played well, and I’m very happy with our performance, despite the result,” said Lehigh head coach Manny Oudin. “Our enthusiasm was there; we worked hard and played a spirited game, they (Princeton) just had one very good chance and they capitalized on it.”

Princeton scored the game’s lone goal late in the first half. Canadian international Diana Matheson collected the ball wide of the 18-yard box and delivered a pinpoint centering feed that Valerio tapped home for her third goal of the season. Matheson picked up her seventh assist and 13th point in just five games played.

Lehigh had a terrific chance to tie the game minutes later, but senior Melissa Montalvo’s centering pass just missed the foot of freshman Glynn Fitzer, who was open at the far post.

In the second half, both teams juggled their line-ups to give key players some rest with important league games on the schedule this weekend. All 21 healthy Mountain Hawks saw the field, and senior Addie Burton nearly tied the game, but after pouncing on a turnover, her shot glanced off the crossbar and out of play for a goal kick.

“When we play with energy and play the way we did tonight we are a good team,” said Oudin. “Hopefully we can build on this heading into our game this weekend.”

The Tigers out shot the Mountain Hawks 12-5 on the night and had a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks. Maren Dale made two saves to earn the shutout in goal, while all three Lehigh keepers saw action on the night. Junior Julie Kafka played the first half and made four saves and sophomore Lauren Mains played the first 31 minutes of the second half, before giving way to sophomore Natalie Krane. Neither reserve keeper was credited with a save.

The Mountain Hawks will return to the pitch on Saturday night when arch rival Lafayette visits the Ulrich Sports Complex. Game time is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast online at Lehighsports.com with streaming video powered by Yahoo! Sports.
