“This was a big win of us, on the road against a team we had struggled against in the past,” said Lehigh head coach Julie Mazer. “We could have let down when they tied it late, but we kept playing hard and fighting through it. From the players on the field, and everybody helping out on the bench as well, it was really a total team effort.”
The first 35 minutes saw no scoring from either side. Christy Smith scored the game’s opening goal in the 44th minute, as she took a pass from sophomore Kelly Fox and raced on a breakaway down the field, beating Erin Singleton for her fifth goal of the season.
Ten minutes later, Lehigh made it 2-0 as Smith fed junior Kalynn Davies, who scored her eleventh goal of the season.
The Crusaders cut into the Mountain Hawks lead two minutes after Davies’ goal, as Kara Gonnerman scored an unassisted goal to make it 2-1. Callahan then tied the game scoring off a feed from Lauren Coletta at the 67:02 mark.
In the overtime, Christy Smith found herself on another breakaway and beat Singleton low to the left corner of the cage for her sixth goal of the season. Smith also scored the overtime game-winner in Lehigh’s other Patriot League win, a 3-2 triumph over Bucknell on September 29. The Mountain Hawks also picked up their first win against Holy Cross since a 2-1 overtime win in 1996.
Lehigh out shot Holy Cross 10-7 for the game, but the Crusaders held a 5-3 advantage in penalty corners. Freshman Jessica Miller made four saves to earn the win in the goal cage, while Singleton set aside five for the Crusaders, who fall to 4-11, 1-2 in the league with the loss.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to
