BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Nine home duals and four match-ups against top 10 finishers from last year’s NCAA Championships highlight Lehigh’s 2006-07 wrestling schedule announced by head coach Greg Strobel on Tuesday. The Mountain Hawks will face another challenging schedule that includes trips to California and Arizona for duals and a second straight appearance in the Southern Scuffle in December. Lehigh is also slated to wrestle duals against eight EIWA rivals, as the Mountain Hawks will be gunning for their sixth straight EIWA title come March.

“I’m very pleased with the quality of this schedule,” said Strobel, the 2006 EIWA Coach of the Year who is entering his twelfth season. “We will wrestle duals against a lot of great teams, and we have a really good home schedule that features the likes of Michigan, Cornell, Nebraska and Penn.

“This schedule is one that will really test and develop our team,” Strobel adds.

Fans will get their first look at the 2006-07 team, which includes seven returning NCAA Qualifiers and one of the nation’s top recruiting classes, on Tuesday, November 7, with the annual wrestle-off’s inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Three days later, the Brown and White will kick off the dual season in Lawrenceville, N.J. against Rider. This will mark the second straight year that Lehigh opens with the Broncs, and the first time since 1998 that the Mountain Hawks open the dual season on the road.

On Thursday, November 16, the Mountain Hawks will welcome Michigan to Leeman-Turner Arena for Lehigh’s home opener, which this year also serves as the unofficial kick-off for the Lehigh-Lafayette football weekend. The Mountain Hawks beat the Wolverines at Grace Hall on this very same weekend two years ago and last year an undermanned Lehigh team nearly upset top-five Michigan in Ann Arbor. On Sunday the 19th, Lehigh will take part in the Pennsylvania duals, this year being hosted by Lock Haven, after two years at Penn State.

December begins with Lehigh’s second home dual when the Drexel Dragons come to town on the first. The following weekend, Lehigh will make the trek west, stopping in State College on December 8 to tangle with longtime rival Penn State, before heading further west to meet Pittsburgh on December 9. Lehigh has wrestled Penn State 94 times, more than any other opponent. The two teams tied for ninth at the NCAA Championships, but the Mountain Hawks will be looking to avenge a pair of dual losses to the Nittany Lions last season.

After a couple weeks off for final exams, Lehigh will wrap up 2006 at the Southern Scuffle in Greensboro, North Carolina. The Mountain Hawks placed sixth at last year’s Scuffle, but Strobel likes the fact that he can bring as many as 15 wrestlers down to the event to gain valuable match experience.

The Mountain Hawks will kick off 2007 on the west coast with a visit to Stanford, California for the Stanford Duals on January 5. Lehigh will face UC Davis and the host Cardinal, who are coached by former Lehigh volunteer assistant Kerry McCoy.

After getting re-acquainted with McCoy and his Stanford team, Lehigh will head to Tempe, Arizona for the Sun Devil Duals on Sunday, January 7. The Mountain Hawks are slated for two duals against Pac-10 opposition, facing off against Arizona State and Cal State Fullerton while in the desert.

Following their western swing, the Mountain Hawks will travel to Annapolis on Saturday, January 13 to open the EIWA dual season against longtime rival Navy. After that match, seven of Lehigh’s final nine duals will be in Bethlehem.

Stabler Arena should be rocking on Friday, January 19 when the Big Red of Cornell visit. Cornell has finished second to Lehigh in each of the last two EIWA tournaments, and the Mountain Hawks and Big Red, along with Penn, are once again expected to battle it out for EIWA supremacy.

The following weekend features four duals in two days at three different sites. On Saturday, January 27, Lehigh will host New England EIWA foes Harvard and Brown. The next day the Mountain Hawks will hit the road, traveling to Columbia in the afternoon before wrapping up the weekend on Long Island against Hofstra.

Lehigh will have the next weekend off, and will return to the mats on Saturday, February 10 with another doubleheader at Leeman-Turner Arena, with duals scheduled against Army and Rutgers.

On Friday, February 16, Lehigh will host Big 12 member Nebraska in the annual Billy Sheridan memorial dual, named for the legendary former Lehigh head coach. The dual will be the first recent Sheridan Dual held in Grace Hall, as opposed to Stabler Arena. It will also be just the fifth meeting between the schools and will mark Nebraska’s first visit to Bethlehem since 1939.

Two days later, Lehigh will wrap up the dual season with another highly anticipated EIWA showdown at Stabler Arena, when the Mountain Hawks host Penn. The Quakers placed third at last year’s EIWA tournament but gave the Mountain Hawks all they could handle in Lehigh’s late season dual victory at the famed Palestra.

After winning their fifth straight EIWA championship at Stabler Arena last year, Lehigh will not have to travel far to try and become the first team since Cornell in 1917 to win six straight titles. East Stroudsburg University will host the 103rd EIWA Championships, March 2 and 3.

The 2007 NCAA Championships will take place March 15-17 at The Palace of Auburn Hills, Michigan.

Season ticket renewal forms have already been sent to 2005-06 season ticket holders. The deadline to renew season tickets was September 5. On September 7, season tickets will be available to the general public, with single match tickets going on sale on September 21.

The Mountain Hawks will open the 2006-07season on the road against Rider at 7:00 on Friday, November 10. For home dual ticket information, visit the Lehigh ticket office located inside Grace Hall or call (610) 7LU-GAME during business hours.
