BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh wrestling program held the 83rd Lewis Wrestling Dinner on Friday, March 31, at Iacocca Hall on Lehigh’s Mountaintop Campus, to look back on the 2005-06 season and honor a Mountain Hawk team that won its fifth consecutive EIWA Championship and placed in the top ten at the NCAA Championships for the fifth straight season. Over 200 wrestlers, parents, alumni, friends, coaches and support staff were on hand for the event.

Several Lehigh program awards were handed out for individual accomplishments from the 2005-06 season, and the seven Lehigh seniors offered their thoughts on their careers wrestling for the Brown and White.

The program’s highest honor, the Scholar-Athlete Award went to senior Travis Frick. Given to the student who best combines academics and athletics, Frick earned his degree in industrial engineering in 2005 and while taking graduate classes made the Dean’s List majoring in management science. On the mat, Frick won his second EIWA title and placed sixth at the NCAA Championships, his second time earning All-American honors.

Senior Cory Cooperman was named the team’s Outstanding Athlete, awarded to the team member who makes the most outstanding athletic contribution to the accomplishment of the team. Cooperman was 26-2 this season, and won his third EIWA championship. At the NCAA Championships, Cooperman advanced to the national semifinals at 141 and ended up placing third for the second consecutive season, becoming a three-time All-American in the process.

The Coaches Award went to senior Derek Zinck. The award is given to the individual who made significant contributions to the well-being of the team in terms of attitude, improvement, or special leadership. Zinck became a two-time All-American in 2006, advancing to the national semifinals before placing fifth at 157 pounds. He finished the season with an impressive 24-5 record.

The Lehigh wrestling banquet was made possible by the Lehigh Athletics Partnership program, whose mission is to promote interest in Lehigh Athletics, to encourage and provide financial support to the program and to enhance relations with all former participants, fans, friends, and parents of Lehigh student-athletes.  For more information about the Partnership Program please call Barb Turanchik ’75 at 610-758-4301.
