LEWISBURG, Pa. – Lehigh catcher Matt McBride ripped five hits in eight at-bats, stole four bases, and scored three times as the visiting Mountain Hawks split a Patriot League doubleheader with Bucknell at Depew Field.  Lehigh took game one 7-5; the Bison salvaged game two by the same score.  With the split, Lehigh (13-16 overall, 3-1 Patriot League) captures three of the four games in the series.

Bucknell is 8-17, 1-3 following Sunday’s split.

Lehigh won the opener by a 7-5 count thanks to three hits from McBride and designated hitter Mark Bernhard, and a pair of runs batted in from Matt Geiger.  Nick Bet also contributed a key double and sacrifice bunt in the win.

On the mound, sophomore Joe Matteo struck out six over six and one-third innings to earn the win (2-3).  Freshman Geoff Campbell recorded the game’s final two outs to pick up his second save of the season.

Four Bucknell players had multiple-hit games in the opener in a losing effort.

In game two, the Bison smacked 14 hits and avoided a series sweep on their home field with a 7-5 win.  Shortstop Matt Capece was 3-for-5 with a double and two runs batted in for Bucknell in the win.

Campbell (0-1) surrendered three runs in the game’s final three innings, and was saddled with the loss.

Offensively, shortstop Liam O’Connor was 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs batted in for Lehigh.  McBride added two more hits, two more runs scored, and two more stolen bases for the Brown and White.

“I thought we played well in all four games,” said Lehigh head coach Sean Leary.  “It’s not easy to win three games on the road in the league but we got timely hitting and good pitching.”

Lehigh returns to action on Wednesday, when the Mountain Hawks visit Temple – a team that LU has beaten twice already this season.  First pitch is tentatively set for 3:30 pm from Ambler, Pa.
