Lehigh advances five in Session I at NCAAs

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Thursday’s morning session is in the books at the 76th NCAA wrestling championships at Ford Center in Oklahoma City and Lehigh advanced five of nine wrestlers in the Championship Bracket. All four seeded Mountain Hawks advanced to Thursday night’s round of 16 as did junior heavyweight Paul Weibel, who was the only one of the five Lehigh first-time qualifiers to win his first NCAA tournament bout.

Freshman Matt Fisk was the first Mountain Hawk to take to the Ford Center mats, but he fell 5-2 to Javier Maldonado of Chattanooga and will wrestle a pigtail consolation versus Steve Mytich of Drexel.

Senior Cory Cooperman was Lehigh’s first winner of the day, with a 3-0 shutout over Kevin Artis of UNC-Greensboro. The match was tighter than most expected, with Cooperman scoring a third period takedown to seal the win.

After Trevor Chinn was pinned by Edinboro’s Gregor Gillespie at 149, Lehigh rolled off three more wins from its senior captains. Derek Zinck scored six in the first period on two takedowns and a reversal and held off James Strouse of Hofstra 7-4. Troy Letters put a bonus point on the board for Lehigh with a 10-2 major decision over Jason Cardillo of Slippery Rock. Travis Frick did likewise with a convincing 15-5 win over Jared Ricotta of Duquesne.

Junior David Helfrich was unable to continue the momentum as he fell victim to a major decision against Oregon’s number five seed Shane Webster at 184. Fellow junior Matt Cassidy pushed tenth seed Matt Delguyd of Northwestern to the limit, but Delguyd finally scored a takedown with 14 second left in the second sudden victory period to earn the win.

In the Mountain Hawks’ final bout of the day, Paul Weibel was able to turn Tyler Rhodes’ throw attempts in to high scoring maneuvers of his own. Weibel hit a four point move seconds into the match before working a series of tilts to take a 9-1 lead. Rhodes attempted the same throw again, and again Weibel countered, this time putting the Northern Iowa heavyweight to his back for a first period fall.

In the team standings Lehigh currently one of four schools tied for 16th place with 10 points. Three-time defending champion Oklahoma State holds a one point lead over Hofstra.

The 2006 NCAA Championships will continue Thursday night from Ford Center with round of 16 matches, pigtail consolations and first round consolations. Action gets underway at 7:30 pm EST, with audio coverage available online at lehighsports.com with streaming powered by Yahoo! Sports.
