Lehigh falls to No. 5 Cornell in Ithaca

ITHACA, N.Y. – Lehigh saw its four-game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday afternoon as the Mountain Hawks fell to the No. 5 Cornell Big Red by a score of 12-3. Lehigh received one goal apiece from David Gaunt, Michael Zurfluh and Richard Cornetta, while Derek Haswell and David Mitchell both scored three times for the home team. With the loss, the Brown and White falls to 4-2 overall, while Cornell remains perfect at 4-0.
Cornell went up 1-0 on an EMO goal scored by Joe Boulukos exactly five minutes into the contest off of an assist from Eric Pittard, but the Mountain Hawks tied the game at one when Cornetta scored his first goal of the season just 1:07 later on an assist from Stephen Marino. The Big Red then scored the next three goals of the quarter to head into the second up 4-1.
Haswell scored the first two goals of the second quarter to put the Big Red ahead 6-1 with 11:24 remaining in the half, and teammate David Mitchell added a goal of his own to push the advantage to 7-1 with 6:53 left. Gaunt brought the Mountain Hawks to within five at 7-2, with his lone goal of the day at the 5:26 mark, but a Brian Clayton score with 3:48 sent the Big Red into halftime up 8-2.
Zurfluh scored his first goal of the day right after the halftime break to bring the Mountain Hawks to within five at 8-3 at the 13:05 clip, but the Big Red cruised from there, scoring the game’s final four goals to earn the victory. Neither team would score in the final 15 minutes of play.
Cornell out shot the Mountain Hawks 29-18 on the afternoon and scooped up 33 ground balls to Lehigh’s 32. The Brown and White was 13 of 18 on clear attempts and won 10 of the game’s 19 face offs. In goal for Lehigh, Eric Spirko got his first start of the season and responded with six saves in 60 minutes of work, while for Cornell, Matt McMonagle sent back 10 Mountain Hawk shots.
Jeff King led Lehigh with nine ground balls on the day, while Spirko added five and Stuart Baxter scooped up four. Tom Weiss won nine of 17 face offs and Marino was the leading assist man yet again, handing out two.
