Haverford tops Lehigh, 7-4

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Haverford spoiled Lehigh’s home opener with a 7-4 win over the Mountain Hawks at the baseball field on Goodman Campus Wednesday afternoon.  In addition to facing each other, the teams battled bitter cold temperatures and sustained winds near 30 miles per hour (gusting over 40 at times).  The victory was the Fords’ second in Bethlehem in as many days; Haverford topped Moravian on Tuesday.  The loss drops the Mountain Hawks to 6-8 on the season.

The two teams combined for six doubles in the game – many of them wind-aided – including four from Haverford (7-4).  The Fords scored in each of the game’s first four frames in building a 5-1 lead in the fourth.

Defensively, the Mountain Hawks struggled, committing a season-high five errors in the game, hurting their chances for a comeback after trailing by a 7-1 score.

Offensively, first baseman Matt McBride paced Lehigh with two hits in three at-bats.  McBride also brought home a run on a sacrifice fly, giving him a pair of RBIs in the game.

On the hill, the Lehigh bullpen proved to be a bright spot late in the game.  Sophomore Billy Alec (three innings) and freshman Geoff Campbell (one inning) allowed only one hit while striking out six over the contest’s final four frames.

For Haverford, Travis Zier scattered four hits and four walks over five innings pitched to earn the win.  Shortstop Ben Einbinder and catcher Kenny McAlpine registered two hits each in the win.

Lehigh returns to action over the weekend with a four-game home-and-home series with Penn.  The Mountain Hawks and Quakers will square off Saturday in Philadelphia in a doubleheader beginning at 11:30 am.  The two teams will then play a pair at the baseball field on Goodman Campus on Sunday at noon.
