Mountain Hawks fall to Princeton in final seconds

12/6/2006 12:00:00 AM | Football

PRINCETON, N.J. – Princeton’s Marcus Schroeder drew a questionable foul call as time expired in regulation, and Schroeder calmly sank a free throw to lift the Tigers to a 44-43 win over visiting Lehigh inside Jadwin Gym on Wednesday night.  The win lifts the Tigers record to 6-2 on the season, while the Mountain Hawks have their two-game winning streak snapped and fall to 4-7.

After Lehigh tied the game in the waning moments, Schroeder corralled an offensive rebound in the corner, and Lehigh’s Marquis Hall was whistled for contact as Schroeder fell out of bounds at the horn.

Lehigh disputed the call, but in the end, Schroeder was awarded a pair of free throws.  With the two teams standing at their respective benches, Schroeder drained the first to end the ballgame.

Head coach Billy Taylor was asked about the foul call after the game.  “The call was made, there is nothing we can do about it,” he said.  “But we had our chances before the end of the game. We didn’t come out with the intensity I would have liked to see after halftime and Princeton was able to take advantage.  We had a few lapses throughout the half and in the end, it cost us.”

Lehigh’s trio of seniors, Kyle Neptune (15), Jason Mgebroff (12) and Jose Olivero (10), each hit for double figures, while no other Mountain Hawk scored more than two points.  Lehigh shot just 33 percent from the field on the evening, but out rebounded the Tigers 35-27.  Freshman Marquis Hall dished out three assists, while Mgebroff grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds.

Princeton was led on offense by Lincoln Gunn’s 12 points, nine of which came via the three-point shot.  Zach Finley and Edwin Buffmire each grabbed six boards for the Tigers.

Princeton opened the second half with a 9-0 run to forge ahead at 25-23.  However, Lehigh kept its composure, and the Mountain Hawks used a nine-point run of their own to re-gain the lead.  Lehigh’s lead was short-lived, as Princeton re-took the lead on a dunk from senior Edwin Buffmire with 7:09 remaining.

The Lehigh defense set the tone in the opening 20 minutes, holding the Tigers to just six first half field goals, including a 1-of-8 effort from beyond the arc.  Lehigh controlled the glass in the first half, out-rebounding the Tigers 17 to 11.  Jason Mgebroff led Lehigh’s efforts on the boards, grabbing five first half rebounds.

Offensively, Jose Olivero scored ten points on 4-of-8 shooting to lead the visitors, and Kyle Neptune chipped in with six to lead the Mountain Hawks to a 23-16 lead at the half.

Princeton’s 16-point output over the first 20 minutes marked the fewest points allowed by a Lehigh defense since surrendering just 14 in a win over Swarthmore one week ago.

Lehigh returns to the hardwood on Saturday, when the Mountain Hawks head to Coral Gables, Fla. to take on the Miami Hurricanes.  Tip-off is set for just after 1:00 pm from BankUnited Center on the UM campus.  The action can be heard live in the Lehigh Valley on ESPN Radio 1230 and 1320, as well as on-line at Lehighsports.com with streaming provided by Yahoo!
