Lehigh remains unbeaten in PL with 1-1 tie at Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Lehigh failed to earn a full three points for the first time in Patriot League play, but the Mountain Hawks managed to remain undefeated in league games with a 1-1 draw against Army at Clinton Field on Saturday afternoon. The tie puts Lehigh at 3-0-1 in the Patriot League and 7-6-1 overall. Lehigh’s 10 points are two behind league-leading Navy. Army is now 4-9-2, 0-2-2 with the draw.
The wind was a major factor for both sides throughout the game as whichever team had the wind at its back seemed to have the better of the play. Lehigh had the wind in the first half and out shot the Black Knights 10-6 in the opening half, but were unable to convert.
The Mountain Hawks finally broke through four minutes into the second half. Lehigh cleared the ball off its backline and from the right side senior Lauren Calabrese made a run and crossed the ball to junior Melissa Montalvo who buried a shot from 15 yards away to put Lehigh up 1-0. The goal was Montalvo’s second of the season, with Calabrese nabbing her first assist of the year on the play.
Army found an equalizer in the 61st minute as Sarah Goss turned and shot from the top of the box to tie the game at one.
With no further scoring in regulation, the game moved to overtime. Lehigh had the better of the chances in the first 10 minute period, including a quality chance by senior Daniela Molina. The Black Knights held the better of the second half, but in the end each team settled for the tie and the point in the league standings.
“Any time you can go on the road and earn a point in a league match it’s a good day,” said Lehigh head coach Manny Oudin. “We’re pleased with the point and we’re pleased to still be undefeated in the league. Now we have to prepare for two tough games next weekend against Navy and American.
For the game Army out shot Lehigh 23-17, while the Mountain Hawks held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore Julie Kafka made eight saves on the afternoon, while her Black Knight counterpart Rebecca Garcia stopped five shots.
Lehigh will return to the pitch on Friday when the Mountain Hawks travel to first place Navy for a key league match. Game time is set for 7:00 pm from the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
