STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Lehigh improved its record to a perfect 5-0 on the season with a 2-0 blanking of Stony Brook at LaValle Stadium on Sunday afternoon.  The shutout win was the Mountain Hawks’ fifth straight shutout to start the season, running the shutout streak to an astounding 455:23 to start the 2005 season.

Lehigh’s five game winning streak is also the longest in school history.

“I’m pleased with the way we came out and competed after a long travel day on an unfamiliar surface,” explained head coach Manny Oudin following the victory.  “I was pleased with the way our midfielders controlled the tempo in the first half.  We gave up some things defensively, but cleaned that up in the second half.”

Lehigh got on the board first in the tenth minute when junior Daniela Molina fed junior captain Gina Lewandowski whose shot hit the far pipe and ricocheted into the back of the net at 9:39 of the first half.  The goal was Lewandowski’s second of the season.

In the 25th minute, Stony Brook’s Danielle Lewis eluded Lehigh goalkeeper Julie Kafka, who had come out to challenge on the play.  But Lehigh junior captain Molly Luft raced in and knocked the ball out of harm’s way, keeping the Mountain Hawks’ amazing season opening shutout streak in tact.  Luft was injured on the play, and did not return to action.

The Mountain Hawks added to their lead in the 54th minute when sophomore Shannon Lockwood fed classmate Jen Fetsick who beat SBU keeper Cindy Bennett for her second score of the season.

“Coach (Oudin) told us to play the ball to our feet,” explained Fetsick, when referring to the playing surface.  She then added, “We worked really hard over the summer and during the preseason to improve our defense.”

Kafka recorded two saves in the win for Lehigh, and Bennett made eight stops for the Seawolves.  Lehigh out-shot Stony Brook 17-7 on the afternoon, and the Mountain Hawks had one corner kick to two for Stony Brook.

The loss drops Stony Brook to 1-4-1 on the season.

The Mountain Hawks return to the pitch on Tuesday, when Lehigh visits Saint Joseph’s.  Action gets underway at 7:00 pm.
