Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh head coach Liz Ota has announced the signing of 12 student-athletes that will join the Mountain Hawks program in the fall of 2005. This is Ota’s first recruiting class at Lehigh and consists of a group of young women that have accomplished a great deal both on and off of the field during their high school days. “Each of these recruits is coming from very competitive high school programs, and they have all experienced much success during their scholastic careers,” explains Ota. “This class is solid and comprised of women who are dedicated to academics and athletics. They truly care about how well they perform, both in the classroom and on the playing field and really took the student-athlete part of the recruiting process very seriously. Overall, I am very happy with this group of recruits.”
Jeannette Ambrosio attends Radnor High School in Pennsylvania, which has one of the strongest lacrosse programs in the entire state. Ambrosio is the Mountain Hawks second player from Radnor in two years, joining Libby Gill.
Allyn Bradbard comes to Lehigh from Rockville High School in Maryland where she was a First-Team All-Montgomery County and First-Team All-League selection.
Arriving by way of Upper Dublin High School in Pennsylvania is Jennika Flothmeier. Jennika was a three-sport standout at Upper Dublin (field hockey, swimming and lacrosse). Jennika’s older brother, Grant, will be a senior student-athlete (swimmer) at Lehigh.
Sarah Fudin and Tess McGrath both attend Bethlehem Central High School in Albany, New York, which is a highly ranked program that regularly wins the state championship. Bethlehem Central has won five NYSOHSAA Division Two Section Championships (suburban council). “The head coach at Bethlehem Central was recently hired as an assistant coach at Syracuse University, indicating the level of program these two young women are coming from,” explains Ota.
From Hopewell Valley High School in New Jersey comes Maureen Gallagher. Maureen was a three-sport athlete at Hopewell Valley High School, helping to lead the field hockey, basketball and lacrosse programs.
Sara MacIntyre was a 2004 and 2005 Interac All-League selection out of Agnes Irwin in Pennsylvania. In the 2005 Season, Sara was one of the team leaders in points with 51 points (32 goals, 19 assists).
Kaitlin O’Connor and Meagan Tenety arrive in South Bethlehem by way of Babylon High School on Long Island. O’Connor was a 2004 All-League selection, while Tenety was the second highest rated player by the head coaches in Babylon’s league in 2004 (out of 300 players). Tenety also broke the school record for goals with 57 in 2004 and the assist record as well.
Kyle Roth comes to Lehigh from Severn School in Maryland, one of the top programs in the entire state. Kyle played both field hockey and lacrosse. Recently Severn competed in the 2005 IAAM Lacrosse Championship, ultimately falling to St. Mary’s by one goal.
From Joel Barrow High School in Connecticut comes Ashley Scavo, who has garnered All-State, All-Conference and All-Area laurels. She has also received the Super Juniors Award, was the Southwest Conference Championship MVP and led her high school to the State Championship in 2004.
Meghan Tranter arrives in Bethlehem from Mount Hebron High School in Maryland. Tranter’s high school team is the number-one ranked squad in all of America and has won a state championship on 12 separate occasions.
Ota offers more of her thoughts on the newest Mountain Hawks: “It is exciting that we have tapped into very strong lacrosse areas and more specifically, school programs, where we hope to establish ‘pipelines’ for future recruits.” She continues, “This class should mesh together very well and each of them is very excited to be part of a building lacrosse program here at Lehigh.”
When Ota set out recruiting this class, did she focus on positional needs, or best player available? “We did a little bit of both by position and need. Some of these girls will be asked to switch positions in college, which is very common, while others will stay at the positions they played in high school.” Ota continues, “All of these girls have true athletic talent, possess tremendous footwork and stick work and as a whole, this class has a great deal of speed. I feel if you have athletic ability and speed, that we can find a position out on the field for you.”
