Easton, PA – Lehigh dropped a pair of Patriot League contests at rival Lafayette on Sunday, falling by a score of 7-6 in game one and 6-2 in the nightcap.  The pair of setbacks drops the Mountain Hawks to 24-18-1 overall and 11-7 in the Patriot League.  The two wins improve the Leopards to 17-24 overall and 5-9 in the league.

Despite the pair of losses Sunday, the Mountain Hawks will make their fourth consecutive appearance in the Patriot League tournament (a school record) thanks to Bucknell and Holy Cross splitting their four-game series in Worcester.  Army captured its second consecutive regular season crown with a win over Navy on Sunday.

In Lehigh’s first contest at Lafayette Sunday, senior pitcher Jack Muscalus’ bid to become the Patriot League’s all-time leader in wins was thwarted as he was touched up for seven earned runs in four and two-thirds innings of work.  The right-hander falls to 5-2 on the season with the setback, and he remains tied for the league’s all-time wins record with 25.

Down by a run in the third, freshman center fielder Joe Ercolano hit his third home run of the season – a solo shot to right – to tie the score at 1-1.  The Mountain Hawks then went on top by a 6-1 score in the fifth thanks to a four-run frame.

However, in the bottom of the inning, the Leopards’ third baseman Frank Cortazar led off the frame with a solo homer, jump-starting a six run inning as the home team rallied for the win.

In game two, Lafayette scored twice in the first inning off freshman starter Joe Matteo, but the Mountain Hawks rallied to tie the score in the eighth on a two-run single from shortstop Liam O’Connor.

With the game tied 2-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth, Lafayette rallied to put four runs on the board to take the come-from-behind win, 6-2.

The two teams will renew acquaintances on Monday, as the rivals square off for another doubleheader.  First pitch of game one is set for 1:00 pm from Class of 1978 Stadium in Easton.
