Raniszewski, Doane help Lehigh earn series split

4/5/2005 12:00:00 AM | Baseball

Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh and Army locked horns for the second consecutive afternoon, and, for the second straight day, the two teams split a doubleheader at Goodman Field.  Under picture-perfect skies, the Black Knights downed Lehigh by a 7-2 score in the opener, but the Mountain Hawks rallied to win the nightcap, 5-1.

Lehigh ends the series with a 12-11-1 overall record, while the Black Knights head home with a 13-8 mark.  Both teams are 2-2 in league play.

In game two, the Mountain Hawks used a superb pitching effort from junior Joe Raniszewski to earn the series split.  The junior pitched his first career nine-inning complete game, striking out seven en route to the win.  Raniszewski’s record now stands at 2-1 in 2005 thanks to his stellar effort.

Offensively, first baseman Forrest Doane was the hero.  The senior belted two home runs – both two-run blasts to right field – to tie him with teammate Andrew Smith for the Patriot League lead with six.  He was 2-for-3 in the game.

Earlier in the day, the Black Knights scored three runs in the third and three more in the sixth to take game one, 7-2.  Justin Kashner pitched a complete game for Army to run his record to 4-1 on the season.

Left fielder Andrew Smith was 2-for-2 at the plate with a double, but it wasn’t enough in the opener.

The Mountain Hawks are scheduled to be back in action on Thursday, when Lehigh visits Saint Joseph’s.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm from Philadelphia.
