Mountain Hawks take doubleheader from Bucknell

“I am proud of the way our guys responded [after the game two disappointment on Saturday],” Lehigh head coach Sean Leary told the Lehigh Sports Magazine television show. “Kyle [Collina] gave us the effort we needed in the opener, and our bats woke up in game two.”
In the first game, Collina tossed a complete game, scattering six hits while allowing just one run over seven innings of work in the complete game effort. Collina (3-4) struck out for Bison batters while surrendering only one walk.
Lehigh broke a scoreless deadlock in the bottom of the fourth when Joe Ercolano singled home Mike Sandonato with the game’s first run. After the Bison tied the game with a run in the sixth, shortstop Liam O’Connor tripled home Nick Bet with what proved to be the game-winning run.
In game two, the Lehigh bats got hot and the Mountain Hawks took advantage of several Bucknell miscues to score seven times in the bottom of the second inning. The big blow in the frame came when left fielder Andrew Smith belted a bases-clearing three-run double to right field, putting the Mountain Hawks on top for good.
Leading 7-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning, O’Connor singled home a pair to make the score 9-1 in favor of the home team.
Lehigh junior Joe Raniszewski improved his record to 3-0 on the season, as he went six innings to pick up the win. The trio of Matt Mezzancello, Jed Davitt, and Jack Muscalus kept Bucknell off the board over the final three innings to secure the win.
Lehigh returns to action on Wednesday, as the Mountain Hawks take on Villanova in the Liberty Bell Classic championship game. Lehigh, the defending champion, topped the Wildcats 11-3 a season ago to capture the title for the first time.
