Valparaiso hands Lehigh first defeat of 2005

3/6/2005 12:00:00 AM | Baseball

Bradenton, FL – Valparaiso scored four times in the bottom of the fifth inning and the Crusaders fought off a late Lehigh rally for a 5-4 win over the Mountain Hawks at McKechnie Field on Sunday afternoon.  Valpo improves to 2-5 on the season with the victory, while the Mountain Hawks suffer their first defeat of 2005 and now stand at 2-1 overall.

Lehigh got on the board first when Steve Salemme scored from third on a wild pitch to give the Mountain Hawks a 1-0 lead in the second inning.

The Crusaders put a four-spot on the board in the home half of the fifth, stringing together four hits and taking advantage of a hit batsman with the bases loaded to go up 4-1.

Lehigh answered with two runs in the seventh and one more in the ninth, but came up one run shy in the end.

Left fielder Andrew Smith ripped three hits in four at-bats for Lehigh, scoring twice.  Designated hitter Matt Geiger was 2-for-4 at the plate as well.

On the hill, Kyle Collina (0-1) got the start and was saddled with the loss after 4.2 innings of work.

The Mountain Hawks return to action on Monday morning, when Lehigh takes on Sacred Heart.  First pitch is scheduled for 10:00 am from the IMG Baseball Academy fields in Bradenton.
