Mountain Hawks get back on track with comeback win

3/29/2005 12:00:00 AM | Baseball

Philadelphia, PA – Lehigh let an early 5-0 lead slip away, but the Mountain Hawks rallied for a 10-8 victory over host La Salle at Hank DeVincent Field on Tuesday afternoon.  The win snaps Lehigh’s three-game slide and improves the Mountain Hawks to 9-8-1 on the season.  With the loss, the Explorers are now 6-14 overall.

Lehigh broke a scoreless deadlock in the top of the second to score five runs – despite only one base hit.  The Mountain Hawks took advantage of erratic La Salle pitching to put together a big inning.  In all, there were four walks and one hit batter in the frame.

The Explorers began to creep back into the game with single runs in the second and third innings, cutting the Lehigh lead to 5-2.  La Salle rallied to take its first lead of the afternoon with a four-run, four-hit frame in the bottom of the fourth.

Trailing by a 6-5 count in the seventh inning, Lehigh catcher Matt McBride doubled to plate the game’s trying run.  Later in the inning, reigning Patriot League Player of the Week Matt Geiger singled home two more to put Lehigh ahead for good.  Third baseman John Zaszewski doubled in a run in the eighth that turned out to be the game-winner.

Joe Raniszewski (1-0) pitched two and two-thirds innings to pick up the win in relief for the Mountain Hawks.  Despite surrendering a run in the ninth, sophomore Joel Hockman earned his third save of the season.

Lehigh returns to action on Thursday, March 31, when the Mountain Hawks visit Maryland-Eastern Shore for a doubleheader.  First pitch of game one is set for noon from Princess Anne, Md.
