Mountain Hawks kick off home slate with DH split

3/19/2005 12:00:00 AM | Baseball

Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh opened the home portion of the 2005 schedule by earning a doubleheader split with Binghamton on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Field.  The Bearcats won the opener by a 7-6 score, but Lehigh rallied to win the nightcap, 5-2.  The Mountain Hawks conclude Saturday’s action with a 6-5 record on the season, while the Bearcats are now 4-6 on the season.

In the opening contest, Binghamton struck early on Lehigh starter Jack Muscalus, handing the senior his first setback of the season.  His record now stands at 2-1.  The Bearcats touched Muscalus for seven runs (three earned) in five innings of work.  In addition to four walks issued by Muscalus and four hit batters, the Lehigh defense didn’t help matters by committing two errors.

Offensively for the Mountain Hawks in the opening game, outfielder Nick Bet was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.  Andrew Smith also drove home two runs and scored twice himself.

In game two, Kyle Collina was the story on the hill.  The junior pitched a complete game – allowing only five hits – in the 5-2 Lehigh win.  Collina (2-2) surrendered but two runs in the seventh, while striking out five Bearcats on the afternoon.  He took a no-hitter into the fifth inning.

Once again, Smith set the tone for Lehigh at the plate.  The junior crushed a three-run home run in the first inning to get Lehigh on the board.  Joe Ercolano added a solo homer in the home half of the third inning in the game two win.

The two squads will renew acquaintances on Sunday, when Lehigh and Binghamton meet in another doubleheader.  First pitch of game one is scheduled for Noon at Lehigh’s Goodman Field.
