BGSU got on the board in the bottom of the first, as right fielder Nolan Reimold laced an RBI triple to give the Falcons the early advantage.
Lehigh didn’t take very long to respond, however, as the Mountain Hawks used back-to-back homers to take the lead in the second inning. First baseman Forrest Doane led off the frame with a 450-foot solo blast over the center field wall to tie the game at 1-1. Red-hot left fielder Andrew Smith was up next, and he walloped a pitch over the wall in left-center to make the score 2-1 Lehigh. Later in the frame, shortstop Liam O’Connor singled home a run to give the Mountain Hawks a 3-1 lead.
The Falcons answered with five runs in the bottom of the second, ripping four hits off Lehigh starter Jack Muscalus to regain the lead at 6-3.
Lehigh catcher Matt McBride ripped a one-out single in the third, and Doane followed that at-bat with a walk. With two on and one out, Smith once again provided the power. The junior ripped a three-run homer – this one to right-center field – to tie the game at 6-6. The bomb was Smith’s team-leading third of the season.
The score remained tied into the sixth, until John Zaszewski singled home Mike Sandonato to give Lehigh a 7-6 edge. BGSU tied the game with a run in the bottom of the sixth, and both starters left with a no decision.
Tied at 7-7 in the last of the ninth, BGSU loaded the bases off Lehigh’s Joel Hockman (1-1) with a bloop single, a bunt single, and an intentional walk (following a passed ball). With the sacks full, BGSU third baseman Andy Hudak singled to plate the game-winner.
Smith continued to pace the Lehigh offense, going 2-for-3 at the plate with four more runs driven in. He is hitting .600 for the season. Zaszewski was 3-for-5 for the Mountain Hawks in a losing effort.
