Playoff berth at stake as meeting 141 looms

11/16/2005 12:00:00 AM | Football

Lehigh welcomes archrival Lafayette to Goodman Stadium on Saturday for the 141st meeting of college football’s most-played rivalry and the annual regular season finale for both teams.  Both Lehigh and Lafayette enter Saturday’s game in part of a three-way tie for first place (along with Colgate) atop the Patriot League standings.  For Lehigh, the scenario is simple: win Saturday, and claim the league’s automatic berth in the I-AA playoffs.  For the Leopards, they must win and hope for a Colgate loss at Georgetown in order to be assured of a second straight playoff appearance.

No two teams in all of college football have met more times than Lehigh and Lafayette.  The two rivals have squared off 140 times previously, dating back to 1884.  The Leopards lead the all-time series between these two schools, 73-62-5, but Lehigh has captured 8 of the 10 meetings since 1995.  At Goodman Stadium, Lehigh has won six of the seven previous meetings.

Lehigh’s defense has been playing well of late, allowing Fordham only 128 yards of total offense in the Mountain Hawks’ win last Saturday.  The Rams scored only three points on the day, the lowest output by a Lehigh opponent since Stony Brook scored just two in the 2004 opener.

Lehigh sophomore quarterback Sedale Threatt has been named the Patriot League offensive player of the week twice this season, including this past week.  In the win at Fordham (11/12), Threatt threw for a personal best 258 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing for another score.  Threatt is 4-0 as a starter, including three league wins on the road.

Offensively, the Leopards have used a two quarterback system for much of the season, with Brad Maurer (129 completions) and Pat Davis (36 completions) combining for 16 TD strikes.  Meanwhile, the Leopards defense is among the tops in the nation, allowing only 15.1 points per game.  Senior Maurice Bennett leads the team with 79 tackles in 2005.

Saturday’s game has been sold out for weeks, but fans without a ticket need not worry.  The game will be televised live on WFMZ-TV, FSN Pittsburgh, FCS Atlantic, DISH Network, DirecTV, and lehighsports.com with Steve Degler and Penske Hall of Fame quarterback Marty Horn ’86.  As always, ESPN Radio of the Lehigh Valley will provide live coverage of the contest, beginning with the pre-game show at 11:00 am.  Veteran Matt Kerr will call the action alongside former wide receiver Kody Fedorcha ’00.  Audio and video streaming of the game on Lehigh’s web site is powered by Yahoo! Sports.
