Mountain Hawks fall in tournament semi-finals

4/17/2004 12:00:00 AM | Women's Tennis

West Point, NY – Lehigh was defeated by American in the Patriot League semi-finals on Saturday afternoon by a score of 4-0, to end the Mountain Hawks hopes for a league title.  With the loss, Lehigh ends its season with a record of 13-5, while American moves on to play Army in the Patriot League Championship on Sunday afternoon.

The match started slow for the Mountain Hawks, as they dropped two of the three doubles matches.  Gwen Dwyer and Maria Anorga did manage to pick up one win for the Mounatin Hawks in third doubles, defeating Ashley Retlev and Tessa Holly-Taub by a score of 8-1, but American picked up the point by virtue of two out of three matches victories.

In singles action, Kristin Nowicki defeated Kristina Georgieva in first singles action, while Maria Anorga picked up a win in third singles, defeating Retlev in two sets.  Star Foster also registered a win for the Lehigh ladies in sixth flight singles as she defeated Holly-Taub 6-2 and 4-3 (did not finish).

The Mountain Hawks are finished with this season, but did have one of the most successful years in Head Coach Dave Shook’s tenure at Lehigh.  The Mountain Hawks have reason to be very optimistic for next season, as they will lose just two players to graduation and return a strong core of players that received a wealth of experience this season.
