No. 2 Navy

No. 2 Navy too much for Mountain Hawks

4/16/2004 12:00:00 AM | Men's Lacrosse

Annapolis, MD – Lehigh put up a valiant fight and gave everything it had, but in the end the No. 2 Navy Midshipmen simply had too much firepower for the young Mountain Hawks, as Lehigh fell by a score of 16-7.  Lehigh does have much to be happy about with the game as all seven goals were scored by Mountain Hawk freshmen, led by Stephen Marino and Kevin Houk with two goals each, which bodes well for the future.  With the loss, Lehigh falls to 3-9 on the season, 1-4 in Patriot League action, while the Midshipmen improve to 9-1 on the season, and remain a perfect 6-0 in league play.

Navy came out of the gates and jumped all over the Mountain Hawks, racing out to an eight goal advantage in the first 13 minutes of play, led by Joe Bossi’s hat trick.  Lehigh finally got on the board at the 1:09 mark of the first quarter as Alec Hoof found the back of the net off of an assist from David Walsh.  That made the score 8-1 in favor of the Midshipmen which is how it would stay through the end of the quarter.

The second quarter started a little differently than the first, as Marino and Andrew Mastromonaco bought scored in a matter of three minutes and the Navy lead was down to five at 8-3.  Marino’s goal came off of an assist from Hoof, and Marino then turned around and assisted on Mastromonaco’s score at the 10:29 mark.  Navy then put two more points on the board with back to back goals to pull in front 10-3, which is how the teams stood heading into halftime.

Marino scored goal number two on the day at the 10:31 mark of the third quarter off of an assist from sophomore Connor McCarthy and Lehigh had some momentum early in the half as it trailed 10-4 at that point.  But that momentum was short lived as the Midshipmen reeled off five consecutive scores to surge in front 15-4 and put the game in hand.  Bossi scored once again during the decisive run, and Ian Dingman added goal number 26 on the season as well.

Houk scored a goal at the 5:45 mark of the fourth period off of a feed from Mike Moran to make the score 15-5 in favor of the Midshipmen.  Blake Best and Houk would add two late goals, in the final 35 seconds, but it was too late, as Navy prevailed with the 16-7 league victory.

Moran notched two assists on the day for Lehigh, while Hoof totaled three points, with two goals and one assist.  Tom Weiss won seven faceoffs for Lehigh and goalie Tom Ellis scooped up a team high five groundballs and also made 12 saves for the game.  The Mountain Hawks were out shot by the Midshipmen 48-22 and Navy amassed an astounding total of 62 groundballs, compared to Lehigh’s 27.

Lehigh returns to action on Tuesday when the Mountain Hawks travel to Hamilton, New York to take on Patriot League foe Colgate.  That game is scheduled to get underway at 7:00.
